Position: Assistant Camp Director Salary: $17.50
The YMCA of Metropolitan Washington is currently hiring an Assistant Camp Director. Working at the Y, you will create exciting and impactful experiences for campers, build connections with your peers and Y professionals, expand your leadership skills, and have fun! This is a seasonal position for the months of June through August.
Some of the exciting things you will do as an Assistant Camp Director:
- Ensure all campers have a fun, enriching, and safe experience
- Assist with planning and implement the Y camp program in accordance with the goals and policies of the Y and the camp curriculum
- Assist in providing leadership to camp counselors, including training and daily supervision
- Mentor camp staff
- Ensure daily schedule of activities is carried out for all groups of campers
- Assist in conducting weekly team meetings and provide performance feedback on a daily basis
- Ensure that all counselors have daily schedule and the appropriate supplies and resources to deliver a quality program
- Be responsible for camper safety and security
- Ensure adherence to the policies of the Y
- Motivate, energize and encourage counselors to deliver outstanding programming and customer service daily
- Participate in staff trainings and meetings as required
What you need to be an Assistant Camp Director:
- Be able to work from the week before camp begins for training to the end of the final week of the season
- High school graduate
- 21 years of age
- Willing to participate in and obtain CPR and First Aid Certification
- Clear the local jurisdiction requirements for criminal background and/or fingerprinting
- Meet the county/state licensing requirements
- At least two summers of experience in day camp, recreation, physical education, teaching, or working with school age children
- Prior experience assisting supervising staff
- Work well with and in groups
- Able to effectively communicate with children and parents
Physical requirements:
- Must be able to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time
- Must be physically active to play games and sports with the children
- Must be able to pick-up at least 35 pounds
- Must have visual acuity to observe all children

Basic Function and Scope of Responsibility:
Assists the Camp Director with administrative or supervisory duties
Substitutes for counselors, or oversees a group of campers in addition to other duties
Assist the Camp Director to ensure staff to child ratios, lesson plans and daily schedules are in place and being followed
Supervisory Responsibility:
- No Supervisory responsibility
X Provides guidance, leadership, or training to other employees (no direct supervision)

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Ensures adequate safety procedures are in place for the class being taught
Assists with planning, supervising and implementing the program in accordance with the goals and policies of the YMCA and the day camp curriculum
Assists with supervising day camp staff and ensures that each carries out daily schedule of activites for their specific group of campers
Reviews and discusses with camp director any problems with staff or campers
Ensures documentation of camper attendance, adsenteeism and incidents for each child in compliance with the policies
Ensures that all counselors have daily lesson plans and the appropriate supplies and program needs to deliver a quality program
Responsible for camper’s safety and security; ensures adherence to the policies of the YMCA
Ensures that all staff and campers abide by the Aquatics Policies and Procedures related to camp programs
Communicates with parents regarding their children’s experience
Assists in post-camp evaluation at the end of each camp session
Assist in monitoring the implementation and regulation of hourly head counts of children by group on a daily basis
Ensures all campers emergency records are complete with copies made available to lead counselors
Motivate, energize and encourage counselors to deliver outstanding programming and customer service daily
Supports the program goals of the YMCA as a whole and the branch in particular

Education, Certification, Skills, and Experience:
High school diploma
Must be 21 years of age
Current CPR and First Aid Certification
Documentation of physical examination and TB skin test
Clear the local jurisdiction requirements for criminal background and/or fingerprinting
Must meet the county/state licensing requirements
At least two summers of experience as a Counselor
Must understand and be committed to working with diverse population and to YMCA character development.

- The YMCA requires that all camp staff attend a minimum of 20 hours of training prior to the start of summer camp and that it be documented in personnel files.
