Guidance Counselor
Doctors Charter School is seeking a Guidance Counselor to join our dedicated and caring team. The Guidance Counselor is responsible for implementing a comprehensive school counseling program that supports students’ academic success, career readiness, and personal/social growth in an innovative charter school setting.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Guidance Counselor will:
- Implement the comprehensive school counseling program as outlined in the school’s Professional Counselor Plan.
- Assist students with course planning, course selection, and educational goal setting.
- Support the planning and selection of middle and high school curriculum courses.
- Assist with the administration of standardized assessments and surveys, and interpret results for students and parents.
- Serve as an advocate for all students by providing guidance that supports personal growth, self-understanding, and maturity.
- Maintain student records and protect confidentiality in accordance with applicable laws and school policies.
- Provide student information to colleges and potential employers in accordance with Board policy on student records.
- Assist students with college applications, financial aid information, educational planning, and occupational planning.
- Provide information regarding tutoring, summer school, dual enrollment, and other academic opportunities.
- Coordinate college fairs, college visits, and related postsecondary planning activities.
- Work collaboratively with stakeholders to help narrow the achievement gap.
- Provide professional leadership that supports a school culture conducive to learning.
- Counsel individual students and small groups regarding academic, career, and personal/social concerns.
- Assist students in developing plans to achieve educational, career, and personal/social goals.
- Consult with school-based teams to support appropriate placement decisions and student achievement, including Exceptional Student Education staffings, 504 determination meetings, and Multi-Disciplinary Team meetings.
- Confer with classroom teachers, administrators, support staff, community agencies, and parents regarding student needs.
- Support teachers in the delivery of counseling program-related curriculum.
- Coordinate with school and community agencies to expand student resources.
- Identify resources necessary to achieve school goals.
- Guide individuals and groups of students in educational planning, career awareness, and personal/social growth.
- Identify and analyze critical data, including grades, test scores, attendance, promotion rates, graduation rates, and postsecondary enrollment rates.
- Use data to develop strategies that positively impact student outcomes.
- Follow national, state, and district standards for professional school counselors.
- Adhere to ethical and legal professional standards.
- Use appropriate technology to support counseling services.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
A master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Education, Counseling, or a related field is required. State of Florida School Counselor certification, or eligibility for Florida certification, is also required.
