JOB SUMMARY:
Performs duties in the diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of automobiles, trucks, tractors, road machinery and other types of motor driven, mechanical or other equipment and does related work as required.

· Performs duties in the repair, maintenance or rebuilding of automobiles, trucks, tractors, road machinery, construction equipment and other types of motor driven or mechanical equipment.
· Assist with inventory maintenance.
· Maintain electronic records of work done to Town vehicles and equipment.
· Align and adjust brakes. Install special accessories.
· Install special accessories.
· Welding and metal fabrication.
· Do necessary painting by hand or with spray equipment.
· Perform any duty related to cars, maintenance andrepair of equipment and tools, as required or used in the Public Works Department or other departments, according to assignments.
· Perform related work as required and assigned by supervisors.
· Operate all vehicles and equipment, as required. Be able to drive up to a Class 8 standard transmission truck with plow.
· Maintains and enforces all safety standards applicable to the operation of a repair garage including but not limited to OSHA, EPA, DOT.
· Shall be equipped with the proper tools to perform the duties of the job.
· Respond to emergency repair situations during storms, emergencies, or after-hours operations as needed pursuant to collective bargaining agreement.
SUPERVISION:
· Works under the direction of the Director of Public Works, or Assistant Director Public Works, and Garage Leadman.
· May supervise part-time mechanics and/or personnel assigned to the Town Garage operation.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
· Must have a valid State of Connecticut CDL Class A, license (must be able to get within six (6) months probationary period) and be able to drive a standard transmission vehicle.
· The employee is subject to the FHWA drug/alcohol testing policy of the Town of North Branford.
· High school diploma or GED; supplemented by a technical certification
· ASE certified in brake, air, diesel brake, hydraulic and tune up procedures.
· Three to five (3-5) years of employment in the repair and maintenance of mechanical or motorized equipment OR
· Trade school, technical school or apprenticeship training in automotive repair or shop practice substituted on the basis of one (1) year of employment up to two (2) years and one (1) year of employment of the above type
· Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
· Considerable knowledge of the care, maintenance and repair of automotive, diesel, light and heavy equipment
· Ability to diagnose complex mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical issues.
· Strong communication skills.
· Ability to read, write and keep shop records.
· Ability to read and understand technical manuals, schematics, and repair documentation
· Ability to use existing computerized diagnostic and maintenance management systems and learn new
· Applicants must have the ability to use and care for the tools of the trade, including bench and testing equipment and computer diagnostic equipment.
· Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, vendors, and others.
· Knowledge of welding and metal fabrication
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Depending on functional area of assignment, tasks involve the periodic performance of moderately physically demanding work, usually involving lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of heavy objects and materials (up to 100 pounds) 6-36 inches high, 1-40 feet in distance. Tasks that require moving objects of significant weight require the assistance of another person and/or use of proper techniques and moving equipment. Tasks may involve some climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling.
ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
Tasks are regularly performed indoors and/or outdoors with potential for exposure to adverse conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, fumes and/or poor ventilation, wetness, humidity, rain, temperature, and noise extremes, machinery and/or moving vehicles, vibrations, electric currents, animals/wildlife, toxic/poisonous agents, gases or chemicals, oils and other cutting fluids.
SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:
Some tasks require manual dexterity, in addition to visual and hearing acuity. Some tasks may involve identifying and distinguishing colors. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally and in writing.
