Water and Wastewater Operator – Eastern Shore, Maryland
Professional Start-up and Operating Services, Inc. (ProStart) is currently seeking a qualified and dependable Water and Wastewater Operator to support ongoing operations at multiple small treatment facilities located throughout Maryland’s Eastern Shore region. This position is available as either part-time or full-time, with flexible scheduling options and potential for long-term career advancement.
We are open to training an entry-level candidate who demonstrates strong mechanical aptitude and a desire to grow within the industry; however, preference will be given to applicants who currently hold a Maryland State Water and/or Wastewater Operator License.
Position Summary
This is a field-based role that involves the operation, maintenance, and oversight of decentralized water and wastewater systems. The successful candidate will work independently, traveling between multiple sites, while remaining in close communication with our operations team. The role requires attention to detail, mechanical competency, strong communication skills, and adherence to regulatory and safety requirements.
Key ResponsibilitiesWastewater Operations
- Operate and maintain small wastewater treatment plants, package systems, and pump stations in accordance with MDE regulations and company procedures
- Conduct inspections, equipment checks, and preventive maintenance
- Collect samples and perform field tests to monitor process performance (e.g., pH, DO, BOD, ammonia, phosphorus)
- Maintain accurate operational records and logs; complete state-mandated reporting
- Troubleshoot equipment issues and perform or initiate necessary repairs
- Ensure all systems operate within required environmental permit limits
- Respond to alarms and emergency service calls, as scheduled
Water System Operations
- Operate and monitor potable water treatment systems, including wells, storage tanks, and disinfection equipment
- Perform routine water sampling and testing (e.g., chlorine residuals, bacteria, nitrates)
- Conduct site inspections and routine system flushing
- Respond to customer concerns related to water quality or service interruptions
- Maintain compliance with local, state, and federal drinking water regulations
- Maintain detailed records of system operations and test results
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, or related field is a plus
- Maryland Water and/or Wastewater Operator license preferred (5A, 4, or other relevant class)
- Entry-level candidates with demonstrated mechanical aptitude will be considered
- Strong understanding of basic mechanical and electrical systems
- Proficient in the use of smartphone apps, Excel, and email for communication and reporting
- Must be able to lift 50 pounds and work in various weather conditions
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation required
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment
- Must be flexible and willing to participate in on-call rotation as scheduled
