Position Title: Part-Time Children’s Minister
Church: St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church, Palm Desert, California
Reports To: Rector
Position Summary
St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church seeks a compassionate, creative, and organized Children’s Minister to lead and nurture our ministry with children. This person will develop and oversee engaging Christian formation opportunities for children (primarily ages preschool through 5th grade). The children’s minister will work collaboratively with clergy, staff, and volunteers to cultivate a safe, welcoming, and joyful environment grounded in progressive Episcopal theology and practice.
Primary Responsibilities
- Plan and lead weekly children’s Sunday School using Godly Play curriculum.
- Recruit, train, and support volunteer teachers and helpers.
- Ensure a safe, inclusive, and nurturing environment in compliance with diocesan Safe Church policies.
- Coordinate children’s Christmas pageant held at 4 pm on December 24th, Easter Egg Hunt held on Easter Sunday after the 10 am service and an Advent Wreath making workshop held on the first Sunday of Advent.
- Communicate regularly with parents and caregivers regarding programming, schedules, and special events.
- Maintain program supplies, classrooms, and resource materials.
- Collaborate with the Rector and staff as needed.
- Qualifications
- A growing open and progressive Christian faith and passion for ministry with children.
- Experience working with children in a church, school, or nonprofit setting.
- Familiarity with or openness to learning Episcopal theology, liturgy, and traditions.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Ability to recruit, equip, and encourage volunteers.
- Background check and completion of Safe Church training (or willingness to complete upon hire).
Preferred Attributes
- Training or education in Christian education, child development, education, or a related field.
- Warm, flexible, and collaborative spirit.
Time Commitment & Compensation
- Approximately 10 hours per week (includes Sunday mornings).
- $25 per hour (This is a 9-month position - September through May)
