Position Description:
ABOUT BIOSTL
BioSTL is a nonprofit organization driving the growth of St. Louis as a global hub for bioscience innovation. We champion entrepreneurs, connect the ecosystem, and tell the story of the region's remarkable momentum — and we're looking for a Communications Manager to help us do it even better.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Communications Manager is a hands-on role on BioSTL's three-person communications team, reporting to the Vice President of Communications. We operate like a small, in-house agency serving several internal "clients" — the various teams and initiatives across BioSTL — which means this person will touch nearly everything we do: social media, media relations, event promotion, content, email, and web.
This is a great fit for an early-to-mid career communicator who has a strong grasp of the fundamentals — clean writing, media relations instincts, and a feel for storytelling — and who's looking to grow that range across a variety of formats and tactics rather than specialize in one channel. Candidates coming from a marketing or PR agency background often thrive here, since the day-to-day mirrors that same fast-paced, multi-client, many-tactics environment.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Social Media & Digital Presence
- Lead day-to-day content and strategy for BioSTL's social channels (primarily LinkedIn)
- Manage a content calendar that keeps all channels active, relevant, and on-brand
- Regularly update BioSTL's website, ensuring content stays accurate and fresh
Content Creation & Copywriting
- Write press releases, media alerts, blog posts, and web copy across a range of tones — from short-form social to long-form storytelling
- Contribute to design projects including social graphics, one-pagers, and presentations
Media Relations
- Help build and maintain relationships with local and regional media contacts
- Pitch stories and help secure coverage that supports BioSTL's mission and visibility
- Coordinate media interviews and support spokespeople with logistics and prep
Event & Initiative Communications
- Execute communications tactics for flagship BioSTL events, including the BioSTL Global Health Innovation Summit, Innovators Hour, and Startup Connect
- Attend and support BioSTL events as a communications team member
- Support communications needs for internal teams and initiatives as they arise
Team Operations
- Work closely with teams across the organization, helping plan communications strategy to help their initiatives succeed
- Help keep the communications team organized — tracking deadlines, contributing to agendas, and keeping cross-functional projects on schedule
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
- 3-5 years of experience in communications, public relations, content, or a marketing/PR agency setting
- Strong foundational writing skills across formats — social posts, press materials, web copy
- Comfort managing social media channels and content calendars for an organization or client
- Ability to juggle multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-moving environment
- A collaborative, team-first approach — this is a small team where everyone pitches in
Preferred
- Experience with a marketing or PR agency, especially across multiple clients or accounts
- Hands-on experience with a website CMS (WordPress or similar)
- Familiarity with email marketing tools (Mailchimp, HubSpot, or similar)
- Comfort in Canva or similar design tools
- Interest in bioscience, entrepreneurship, or mission-driven work (no prior industry experience required)
WHY BIOSTL
- Be part of a mission-driven team focused on creating companies, jobs and opportunity for the future of St. Louis
- Get broad, hands-on experience across nearly every communications discipline — not just one channel
- Work alongside a small, tight-knit team where your work is visible and valued
