Lead Carpenter & Construction Specialist
Position Overview
Bealing Roofing & Exteriors is seeking an experienced Lead Carpenter & Construction Specialist to work alongside our roofing and production crews.
This is a hands-on construction position—not a clipboard-and-coffee supervisory position. This person will be expected to arrive at the job site ready to work, use their tools, complete skilled construction tasks, and solve problems throughout the day.
The Lead Carpenter will take responsibility for construction-related work that falls outside the normal roofing installation process. This includes framing repairs, structural carpentry, roof modifications, damaged wood replacement, ventilation work, additions, and other repairs that can be completed by our roofing and construction crews.
The right person will have the experience to assess a problem, determine the correct solution, gather the necessary materials, and personally complete the work. They may direct other employees when help is needed, but their primary responsibility is to be a productive, hands-on carpenter and construction professional.
Nature of the Position
This position requires construction knowledge and decision-making on an hourly basis.
The employee will regularly encounter conditions that were not completely visible before the roof or exterior components were removed. They must be able to determine:
- What is damaged.
- Why the damage occurred.
- Whether the structure is safe.
- What materials are required.
- How the repair should be completed.
- Whether the roofing crew can handle the repair.
- Whether the problem requires an engineer, electrician, plumber, HVAC contractor, or another licensed professional.
This person must be comfortable making practical field decisions while keeping the Production Manager informed.
Primary Responsibilities
Hands-On Carpentry and Construction
The majority of the workday will be spent performing construction work, including:
- Repairing and replacing damaged roof framing.
- Repairing rafters, trusses, joists, beams, headers, and other structural components.
- Replacing damaged or deteriorated roof decking and sheathing.
- Completing repairs caused by water intrusion, rot, insects, or improper previous construction.
- Framing roof additions, extensions, overbuilds, transitions, and tie-ins.
- Modifying roof framing when required for the project.
- Building and repairing porch roofs, small additions, dormers, valleys, and roof transitions.
- Repairing or replacing fascia, soffit, rake boards, trim, and exterior wood components.
- Installing or modifying roof openings and penetrations.
- Installing bathroom exhaust fans and properly venting them through the roof or exterior.
- Installing kitchen, dryer, and other approved ventilation systems.
- Installing or replacing skylights, roof hatches, and specialty roof accessories.
- Completing minor siding, trim, and exterior carpentry work associated with roofing projects.
- Handling unexpected construction issues that are uncovered after demolition begins.
- Assisting the roofing crew when construction-related work is not immediately required.
This employee will be expected to carry tools, climb ladders, work on roofs, handle materials, and physically complete the work.
Field Leadership
Although this is a hands-on position, the Lead Carpenter will also provide direction when other employees are assisting with the work.
Responsibilities include:
- Explaining the repair plan to the employees involved.
- Assigning tasks when additional labor is needed.
- Working beside the crew rather than only observing the work.
- Demonstrating proper construction and carpentry methods.
- Making sure the work is completed correctly before it is covered.
- Helping less-experienced employees improve their construction skills.
- Maintaining productivity throughout the workday.
- Keeping the work area organized and safe.
The Lead Carpenter is expected to lead through knowledge, effort, workmanship, and example.
Jobsite Problem-Solving
- Inspect exposed construction conditions as work progresses.
- Identify framing, structural, moisture, ventilation, and installation problems.
- Determine the proper repair method.
- Develop practical solutions that protect the customer’s home.
- Prepare a material list and obtain approval when additional materials are required.
- Notify the Production Manager when work falls outside the original project scope.
- Help provide the information needed to prepare a change order.
- Recognize when a repair is beyond the company’s scope or requires a licensed professional.
- Prevent the roofing crew from covering damaged or improperly repaired construction.
- Photograph concealed repairs before they are covered.
- Clearly document what was discovered and how it was repaired.
Work Expectations
The employee in this position is expected to:
- Be physically productive throughout the workday.
- Arrive prepared with the proper tools and equipment.
- Take ownership of construction problems instead of passing them to someone else.
- Work independently without requiring constant supervision.
- Move between jobs when their skills are needed at multiple locations.
- Respond to unexpected construction issues that could delay a roofing crew.
- Complete repairs efficiently so the roofing project can continue.
- Maintain Bealing Roofing’s workmanship and safety standards.
- Protect the customer’s home, landscaping, driveway, and personal property.
- Keep the jobsite clean and organized.
- Communicate immediately when a problem could affect the price, schedule, or project scope.
This is not a position for someone who only wants to manage people. The successful candidate must enjoy building, repairing, troubleshooting, and working with their hands.
Required Experience and Qualifications
- Strong professional experience in carpentry, framing, remodeling, roofing, or residential construction.
- At least five years of relevant construction experience preferred.
- Advanced understanding of residential framing and roof construction.
- Ability to identify structural and water-damage issues.
- Ability to determine the proper repair without relying on detailed instructions for every task.
- Experience using saws, nail guns, drills, levels, framing tools, ladders, scaffolding, and standard construction equipment.
- Ability to measure, calculate material needs, and lay out construction work accurately.
- Ability to read project scopes, measurements, drawings, and construction details.
- Understanding of how roofing, framing, flashing, ventilation, siding, soffit, fascia, and exterior components work together.
- Ability to safely work on slope roofs.
- Ability to lead and train other employees while remaining actively involved in the work.
- Valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.
- Dependable attendance and reliable transportation.
- Willingness to work outdoors in changing weather conditions.
- Willingness to work additional hours when necessary to complete or protect a project.
Physical Requirements
- Climb and work from ladders, scaffolding, and roofing surfaces.
- Work safely at elevated heights.
- Lift, carry, load, and position construction materials and equipment.
- Bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, and stand for extended periods.
- Use hand tools and power tools throughout the workday.
- Perform physically demanding work in hot, cold, windy, and changing weather conditions.
- Safely lift and carry approximately 75 pounds when necessary.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate:
- Is an experienced carpenter and construction professional.
- Brings their tools to the jobsite and expects to use them.
- Can look at a construction problem and determine how to fix it.
- Is equally comfortable framing, repairing, troubleshooting, and working on a roof.
- Does not stand back and watch others perform the work.
- Takes pride in repairs that may never be visible after the roof is completed.
- Understands that the quality underneath the roof is as important as the finished appearance.
- Works with urgency without sacrificing quality or safety.
- Remains calm when unexpected damage is uncovered.
- Communicates problems honestly and promptly.
- Helps the roofing crew succeed instead of slowing the project down.
- Leads by working harder, sharing knowledge, and setting the standard.
- Treats every customer’s property with care and respect.
Performance Standards
Success in this position will be measured by:
- Quality and durability of completed construction work.
- Amount of productive hands-on work completed.
