Position Title: Custodian
Location: Holy Spirit Catholic Church
Reports To: Pastor / Administrator / Facilities Manager
Employment Status: Part-Time (as assigned) with the potential to become full-time based on performance and business needs.
Pay Range: $20 - $28 per hour (based on experience and qualifications)
Position Summary
The Custodian is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness, safety, and appearance of the church, parish buildings, classrooms, offices, meeting spaces, and grounds. This position helps provide a clean, welcoming, and reverent environment for worship, ministry, parish activities, and visitors.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Because all Holy Trinity Church employees represent the Roman Catholic Church, they are expected to conduct themselves according to the goals and mission of the Church in performing their work.
Custodial Responsibilities
- Clean and sanitize the church, parish offices, classrooms, restrooms, kitchens, and meeting rooms.
- Vacuum, sweep, mop, dust, and polish floors and furniture.
- Empty trash and recycling containers and dispose of waste properly.
- Clean windows, glass doors, mirrors, and other glass surfaces.
- Replenish restroom supplies, paper products, soap, and cleaning materials.
- Set up and clean up rooms for meetings, religious education classes, parish events, weddings, funerals, and receptions.
- Ensure the church is clean and presentable before all liturgies, parish events, and special celebrations.
- Maintain the cleanliness and reverence of the sanctuary, pews, narthex, sacristy, chapel, and other worship areas in accordance with parish standards.
- Monitor and maintain adequate inventories of cleaning supplies and notify the supervisor when replenishment is needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned
Grounds and Facility Care
- Keep sidewalks, parking lots, courtyards, entrances, and outdoor gathering areas clean and free of debris.
- Pick up litter and empty exterior trash receptacles.
- Report any safety hazards, damaged property, or facility concerns to the supervisor promptly.
Event Support
- Set up and arrange tables, chairs, and other equipment for parish meetings, classes, and events.
- Return rooms to their original configuration after events.
- Assist parish staff and ministry leaders with room preparation as needed.
Safety and Security
- Lock and unlock buildings as assigned.
- Follow proper procedures for handling cleaning chemicals and equipment.
- Maintain a safe and orderly work environment.
- Report accidents, security concerns, or facility issues immediately.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Previous custodial or janitorial experience preferred.
- Ability to operate cleaning equipment safely and efficiently.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform physical work, including bending, kneeling, climbing stairs, and standing for extended periods.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to cleanliness.
- Ability to work independently and manage assigned tasks effectively.
- Reliable, punctual, and dependable.

Working Conditions

- Frequent lifting, bending, kneeling, walking, and standing.
- Exposure to cleaning chemicals while following established safety procedures.
