About Sunset Masonry
Sunset Masonry is an established Arizona specialty contractor performing commercial and high-end residential masonry work. We are growing our project pipeline and investing in stronger estimating, operational controls, and project-management systems.
We are hiring a smart, disciplined construction professional who can help us win profitable work, keep active projects organized, identify cost problems early, and build the systems necessary to support continued growth.
Position Overview
The Construction Estimator & Operations Manager will divide their time approximately equally between:
- Estimating, quoting, and pipeline development
- Operations, project controls, and profitability management
This is not a purely administrative position. The successful candidate must understand construction economics, read plans, develop reliable estimates, manage competing priorities, and recognize where projects may lose money.
The position will work closely with our general manager, field personnel, customers, general contractors, suppliers, and accounting team.
Estimating and Preconstruction Responsibilities
Approximately 20 hours per week will be dedicated to:
- Reviewing plans, specifications, bid invitations, and project requirements
- Completing masonry quantity takeoffs and detailed cost estimates
- Learning and becoming proficient with Tradesmen estimating software
- Developing accurate labor, material, equipment, subcontractor, and production-rate assumptions
- Preparing professional proposals, scopes, exclusions, clarifications, and alternates
- Producing and submitting quality quotes on schedule
- Following up on outstanding proposals and maintaining customer communication
- Evaluating which opportunities should be pursued
- Maintaining an organized bid pipeline and backlog forecast
- Working with field leadership to validate production assumptions
- Building profitable, executable backlog rather than pursuing revenue at any cost
Operations and Project-Control Responsibilities
Approximately 20 hours per week will be dedicated to:
- Becoming highly proficient in Jobber and serving as the company’s principal Jobber administrator
- Maintaining accurate lead, customer, estimate, job, scheduling, and project information
- Converting awarded estimates into organized operational handoffs
- Maintaining project schedules, documentation, purchasing information, and task assignments
- Tracking estimated costs against actual labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractor expenses
- Preparing cost-to-complete and projected-profit reports
- Identifying potential project losses before they become irreversible
- Maintaining change-order logs and ensuring additional work is documented and priced
- Supporting progress billing and collection readiness
- Organizing digital project files and supporting documentation
- Producing weekly reports covering pipeline, backlog, project status, cost risks, and profitability
- Coordinating with the bookkeeper or controller to improve job-cost reporting
Candidate Qualifications
The preferred candidate will have:
- Construction estimating, project-management, or preconstruction experience
- Experience with masonry, concrete, or another specialty construction trade
- Strong ability to read architectural and structural plans
- Practical knowledge of labor productivity, material pricing, project costs, and construction margins
- Strong computer and spreadsheet skills
- The ability to learn technical construction software quickly
- Experience with estimating, takeoff, CRM, scheduling, or project-management software
- Strong written communication and proposal-development skills
- Experience managing change orders, project documentation, and cost tracking
- Excellent organization and follow-through
- The ability to work independently and make commercially sound decisions
- Calm, consistent judgment in a fast-moving construction environment
- The confidence to question unsupported assumptions without creating unnecessary conflict
Previous experience with Jobber or Tradesmen software is beneficial but not required. The ability and commitment to become proficient in both systems is required.
Performance Expectations
The successful candidate will be evaluated based on:
- Quality, accuracy, and timeliness of estimates
- Growth in profitable signed backlog
- Actual project margins compared with estimated margins
- Early identification and control of project-loss risks
- Effective use of: Jobber, Tradesmen, Google Sheets, and Bluebook
- Complete and accurate project documentation
- Timely capture and pricing of change orders
- Quality of project handoffs from estimating to operations
- Reliability of weekly pipeline and profitability reporting
- Reduced administrative burden on field leadership and ownership
The annual performance bonus will be based on measurable results, including profitable backlog, estimate accuracy, margin preservation, operational controls, and effective system implementation. It will not be based solely on revenue.
