SHR Talent is partnering with a healthcare client in Overland Park, KS in its search for an Administrative Director of Surgical Services. This permanent, onsite leadership opportunity offers a weekday schedule with no weekends and is ideal for an experienced perioperative nursing leader who is passionate about driving clinical excellence, operational performance, and exceptional patient outcomes. Reporting directly to the Chief Operating Officer (COO), the Administrative Director will provide strategic oversight of Surgical Services within a high-volume Level II Trauma Center while leading a multidisciplinary team committed to delivering outstanding patient care.
The Administrative Director of Surgical Services will oversee the operational, clinical, and financial performance of a comprehensive perioperative services department that currently includes 11 Operating Rooms, with an expansion underway to 13 Operating Rooms as part of a major capital improvement project that will also double the size of Sterile Processing (SPD), Pre-Op, and PACU. The department performs approximately 450–500 surgical cases each month across multiple specialties including Cardiovascular, Orthopedics, Neurosurgery/Spine, General Surgery, Gynecology, Urology, Vascular, and Trauma. This leader will foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement while ensuring regulatory compliance, operational efficiency, and exceptional patient outcomes.
The ideal candidate is an accomplished acute care Surgical Services leader with strong operational, financial, and clinical expertise. This individual will partner closely with physicians, executive leadership, and multidisciplinary teams to strengthen surgical service lines, improve patient throughput, optimize resource utilization, and develop high-performing clinical teams. Responsibilities:
- Provide strategic and operational leadership for Surgical Services, including the Operating Room, Sterile Processing (SPD), Pre-Op, PACU, GI, and Pre-Admission Testing (PAT), ensuring safe, efficient, and patient-centered care
- Lead, mentor, and develop department leadership and clinical teams by fostering employee engagement, accountability, professional growth, and collaboration across approximately 75 FTEs and three direct-report managers
- Drive quality improvement initiatives through evidence-based practices, regulatory compliance, accreditation readiness, patient safety initiatives, patient throughput optimization, and operational excellence
- Oversee departmental financial performance by managing budgets, forecasting, labor productivity, staffing, capital equipment planning, supply utilization, and cost containment initiatives
- Collaborate with physicians, executive leadership, and interdisciplinary teams to expand surgical service lines, improve operational performance, enhance patient satisfaction, and support strategic growth initiatives across the hospital
Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required
- Master's Degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, or a related field preferred
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Kansas or ability to obtain Kansas licensure prior to employment
- Minimum of 2 years of recent experience as a Director of Surgical Services within an acute care hospital required
- Minimum of 3 years of progressive leadership experience within acute care Surgical Services required
- Demonstrated experience leading perioperative departments, including Operating Room, Sterile Processing (SPD), Pre-Op, PACU, GI, and/or Pre-Admission Testing (PAT) within a hospital setting
- Strong knowledge of perioperative operations, trauma services, quality improvement, Joint Commission standards, regulatory compliance, budgeting, staffing, physician collaboration, patient throughput, and performance improvement initiatives
- Proven ability to lead multidisciplinary teams, manage large-scale surgical operations, improve clinical outcomes, drive employee engagement, and successfully navigate organizational growth and change
- Excellent leadership, communication, financial management, organizational, relationship-building, and critical thinking skills with the ability to influence positive change across all levels of the organization
