Position Overview
A well-established Southern California general contractor is seeking an experienced Construction Superintendent to lead technically complex projects throughout the San Diego region.
The company delivers construction and renovation projects across the life science, pharmaceutical, healthcare, industrial, and commercial sectors. Projects may include laboratories, cleanrooms, medical facilities, controlled environments, specialized tenant improvements, and upgrades within occupied or fully operational facilities.
The Superintendent will be responsible for day-to-day field leadership, jobsite safety, quality control, subcontractor coordination, schedule execution, site logistics, inspections, and communication with the project team. This position requires a proactive field leader who can anticipate construction challenges, maintain accountability among trade partners, and ensure the work is completed safely and in accordance with the contract documents.
Key ResponsibilitiesField Leadership and Project Execution
- Lead daily construction activities and maintain overall control of the jobsite
- Coordinate subcontractors, vendors, field personnel, material deliveries, and equipment
- Communicate project priorities, sequencing requirements, and schedule expectations to all field participants
- Work closely with the Project Manager to develop, maintain, and update the construction schedule
- Conduct daily jobsite walks to evaluate progress, productivity, safety, workmanship, and upcoming needs
- Develop short-term look-ahead schedules and identify potential impacts before they affect project milestones
- Coordinate work within occupied, active, or operationally sensitive environments when required
Safety Management
- Establish and maintain a safe, organized, and professional jobsite
- Lead project safety orientation and startup meetings for subcontractors and field personnel
- Conduct regular safety meetings, inspections, and documentation
- Enforce site-specific safety requirements and applicable OSHA regulations
- Identify unsafe conditions or work practices and ensure corrective action is taken immediately
- Coordinate site logistics, access, temporary protection, emergency planning, and public safety requirements
Quality Control
- Review plans, specifications, shop drawings, submittals, and other project documentation before work is performed
- Confirm that subcontractors understand the scope, details, and quality expectations for their work
- Inspect completed and in-progress work for compliance with approved documents and applicable standards
- Identify conflicts, constructability concerns, and incomplete information before they create field delays
- Coordinate corrective work, punch-list activities, testing, commissioning, and project closeout
- Maintain a strong focus on fit, finish, cleanliness, and overall workmanship
Scheduling and Coordination
- Coordinate construction sequencing with subcontractors and the project management team
- Track manpower, productivity, procurement, material deliveries, and installation progress
- Lead subcontractor coordination meetings and document action items
- Assist with shutdown planning, infection-control procedures, phasing, temporary facilities, and owner coordination
- Support recovery planning when schedule impacts occur
- Coordinate required inspections with local authorities, third-party inspectors, consultants, and project stakeholders
Documentation and Communication
- Maintain accurate daily reports, photographs, safety records, inspection logs, and schedule updates
- Support the management of RFIs, submittals, field directives, change documentation, and material tracking
- Review current project documents to ensure the field is working from the latest approved information
- Communicate regularly with the Project Manager regarding progress, risks, staffing, costs, and potential changes
- Represent the contractor professionally when interacting with owners, architects, engineers, inspectors, and consultants
- Participate in owner and project-team meetings as required
Environmental and Regulatory Compliance
- Maintain required stormwater, site protection, and environmental documentation
- Monitor compliance with applicable SWPPP and BMP requirements when relevant to the project
- Coordinate with inspectors and regulatory representatives to support timely approvals
- Confirm that subcontractors maintain required documentation, insurance, training, and site credentials
Qualifications
- At least five years of commercial construction field leadership experience
- Previous experience serving as the lead or primary Superintendent on commercial construction projects
- Experience with life science, pharmaceutical, laboratory, healthcare, cleanroom, industrial, or technically complex construction
- Experience completing projects valued at approximately $2 million or more
- Strong knowledge of commercial construction means, methods, sequencing, and field coordination
- Ability to interpret construction drawings, specifications, submittals, shop drawings, and technical details
- Working knowledge of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, controls, and specialty building systems
- Experience managing work in occupied, controlled, regulated, or operational facilities is strongly preferred
- Familiarity with healthcare construction requirements and inspection processes is beneficial
- Strong understanding of jobsite safety, quality control, scheduling, and subcontractor management
- Proficiency with standard construction management, documentation, and Microsoft Office applications
- Strong written, verbal, organizational, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to communicate effectively with clients, design professionals, inspectors, subcontractors, and internal teams
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related discipline is preferred but not required
- OSHA certification and additional healthcare or safety credentials are beneficial

Experience involving laboratories, pharmaceutical environments, healthcare facilities, cleanrooms, specialized MEP systems, process piping, controls, commissioning, or phased renovation work would be particularly valuable.
Travel
This position is primarily focused on projects within San Diego County. Periodic travel to other Southern California project locations may be required based on company workload.
