Adult Residential Facility (ARF)
Position Title: Direct Support Professional (DSP)
Reports To: Administrator / House Manager
Position Summary
The Direct Support Professional (DSP) provides direct care, supervision, and support to adults with developmental and/or physical disabilities residing in an Adult Residential Facility (ARF). The DSP assists residents with daily living activities while promoting dignity, independence, safety, community integration, and quality of life in accordance with individualized care plans, licensing regulations, and facility policies.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Resident Care & Support
- Assist residents with activities of daily living (ADLs), including:
- Bathing
- Grooming
- Dressing
- Toileting
- Feeding
- Mobility assistance
- Provide compassionate supervision and emotional support.
- Encourage independence, choice-making, and self-advocacy.
- Support residents with social, recreational, and community activities.
Health & Safety
- Administer medications as authorized and document medication administration accurately.
- Observe and report changes in residents’ physical, emotional, or behavioral conditions.
- Follow individualized behavior support plans and emergency procedures.
- Maintain a safe, clean, and sanitary living environment.
- Assist with medical appointments and transportation as needed.
Documentation & Communication
- Complete daily progress notes and required documentation accurately and timely.
- Report incidents, injuries, and concerns to supervisory staff immediately.
- Maintain confidentiality of resident and facility information.
- Communicate professionally with residents, families, staff, medical professionals, and regional center representatives.
Household Responsibilities
- Prepare meals according to dietary needs and menu plans.
- Perform light housekeeping duties, including laundry and cleaning.
- Maintain adequate supplies and notify supervisor of household needs.
Team Participation
- Attend staff meetings and required trainings.
- Follow all Community Care Licensing (CCL), Regional Center, HIPAA, and facility regulations.
- Work collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams to support resident goals and care plans.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Experience working with adults with developmental disabilities preferred.
- CPR/First Aid Certification (or willingness to obtain).
- Ability to pass background clearance and required health screenings.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to lift, transfer, and assist residents as needed.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Understanding of person-centered care practices.
- Ability to remain calm during emergencies or behavioral situations.
- Professionalism, patience, and compassion when working with residents.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Knowledge of resident rights and abuse reporting requirements.
Work Environment
Residential care setting serving adults with developmental and/or physical disabilities. Position requires standing, lifting, bending, transferring residents, and assisting with mobility equipment. Employee may be both inside and outside where employee may be in both air conditioning and heat. May be prolonged noise or weather. This position will require walking, standing or sitting for extended periods. Stooping, squatting kneeling, overhead reaching and repetitive bending may be involved frequently with this position. Perceiving the nature of sound, near and far. Vision, depth perception, providing oral information, and manual dexterity. Must be able to climb stairs. Requires finger dexterity to operate equipment, handle work with various materials and objects are important aspects of the job. Flexible schedule may include weekends, holidays, overnight, and evening shifts.

- Must have or be willing to complete Direct Support Professional (DSP) 1 & 2 courses
- Mandated Reporter training
