This is a highly skilled work in the maintenance and repair of a variety of automotive and related equipment. Work involves responsibility for performing skilled repair and maintenance work on a variety of automotive equipment including passenger, police, and emergency vehicles, trucks, tractors, mowers, and other construction and maintenance equipment. Work is performed under the supervision of the Garage Mechanic Supervisor and is evaluated for completeness, economy, and efficiency.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Inspects, diagnoses, tests, repairs and maintains a variety of automotive equipment, including trucks, police vehicles, fire apparatus, graders, backhoes, tractors, and other mechanical equipment; uses electrical and computerized test equipment for diagnostic testing.
Tests, repairs and maintains all vehicle and equipment systems, including transmissions, hydraulic, fuel, electrical and electronic, brake, cooling, and emissions systems; sets up new police and public works vehicles.
Picks up parts and picks up and delivers police and fire vehicles for work or outside repair; makes emergency road calls for equipment breakdowns.
Performs major maintenance, overhaul, and repairs as required; performs minor routine maintenance such as oil changes, lubrication, and grease jobs; performs preventive maintenance checks on oil, hoses, batteries, etc.; changes and repairs tires and wheels.
Performs minor bodywork such as repair of dents, rust, replacement parts, and painting on vehicles and equipment.
May alter, adjust, or customize equipment to accomplish specific tasks; keeps shop, work area and tools clean.
Mounts accessories such as wiring harnesses, lights, control panels, gunlocks, bumpers, and related items on emergency vehicles and snow removal equipment.
References service and parts and repair manuals; fills out work orders, keeps records of repairs accomplished; keeps track of inventory of parts and requests order of parts as needed.
Performs miscellaneous duties such as loading trucks with salt during snow and ice season, maintaining gas pumps, and servicing and maintaining backup generators throughout the City.
Performs other related duties and functions as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from high school (or GED), supplemented by vocational training in a variety of areas associated with automotive equipment; considerable experience in maintaining, repairing, and servicing automotive and construction vehicles and equipment; or any equivalent combination of training and experience. Considerable knowledge of the workings and operations of an automotive repair shop.
Possession of master auto, truck and small engine technician certificates preferred.
Possession of a valid Missouri Class B Commercial driver’s license, with airbrake endorsements preferred.
Must possess a valid Driver's License with the ability to obtain Class E within 90 days of hire. CDL is preferred. Must have the ability to obtain CDL within 90 days of hire.
Subject to working a varied schedule that changes seasonally including some evenings, weekends and holidays.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The ability to perform heavy manual labor which entails frequent lifting and carrying of heavy/bulky items such as construction materials, bags of cement, jack hammers, picnic tables, pesticide sprayers, backpack blowers, and full garbage cans which weigh up to 75 pounds.
Distinguish sounds such as warning signals, approaching vehicles, and persons speaking at levels in noisy environments. The employee will be required to work indoors and outdoors, year-round in all types of weather conditions. The employee may occasionally be required to work in high places.
