JOB
The Environmental Inspector serves as an investigator of health and safety for the improvement and control of environmental issues and conditions in the public and private environment. The employee is required to perform routine inspections to determine if sanitary conditions are maintained in the community. This may take place in the workplace, food preparation facilities, industrial producers, or even the general environment.
Work also involves the performance of technical field investigations of private and public facilities designed to enforce compliance with existing laws as they relate to the preservation and control of communicable disease caused by environmental conditions.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
- Interprets and apply relevant laws, ordinances, and rules and regulations pertaining to solid waste and wastewater.
- Performs inspection at building sites, public facilities, private homes, landfill, and wastewater facilities to ensure compliance with environmental laws, rules and regulations, and permit requirements.
- Assists with conducting inspections at non-hazardous special waste sites.
- Investigates complaints of non-compliance with solid waste and wastewater laws, and rules and regulations.
- Works directly with the Authority’s Environmental Enforcement Officers and other authorities to investigate and conclude incidents of non-compliance.
- Works directly with other Authorities to conduct pretreatment inspections.
- Inspects and assesses waste hauler’s equipment, solid waste, and septage haulers’ equipment for compliance with the Authority’s permit program.
- Trains employees within the Authority on compliance rules and regulations and environmental enforcement.
- Conducts investigations, prepares inspection reports, and maintains records.
- Assists in the preparation of case dockets for Court prosecution of ordinance violations.
- Prepare notices of non-compliances and prepare the division head for Administrative Procedures.
- Collect samples as deemed necessary for investigation and prepare required documentation such as chain of custody and lab request sheet as it relates to compliance monitoring.
- Prepares daily and monthly activity reports.
- Performs other duties assigned.
