The Heavy Equipment Mechanic performs skilled diagnostic, repair, and preventive maintenance work on earthmoving and heavy civil construction equipment with gasoline and diesel-powered engines, including excavators, dozers, skid steers, motor graders, front-end loaders, tractors, and trenching machines, as well as related attachments and support equipment used in earthwork, erosion control, roadway, and storm drainage operations. The primary purpose of this position is to minimize equipment downtime by accurately diagnosing, repairing, and servicing equipment in both the shop and the field. The successful candidate must have hands-on experience with hydraulic, electrical, ignition, and drive train systems.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Perform preventive maintenance and repairs on heavy field equipment by troubleshooting, diagnosing, and making adjustments to heavy construction equipment in the shop and at active job sites.

Inspect, repair, adjust, and lubricate diesel and gasoline power units; electrical, ignition, and hydraulic systems; injection valves and systems; moldboards; scarifiers; and belts, and be able to set grade on heavy equipment.

Inspect, adjust, and repair hydraulic and cable-operated attachments on gasoline and diesel tractors and other equipment.

Perform incidental welding and fabrication repairs on equipment in the field.

Maintain accurate service and repair records for each piece of equipment and communicate equipment status to the Fleet Coordinator and Operations team.

Support DOT/FMCSA compliance by identifying and reporting defects on trucks, trailers, and regulated equipment in coordination with the fleet program.

Demonstrate continuous effort to improve operations, decrease equipment turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively with management, superintendents, foremen, and equipment operators.

Remain aware of the hazards of the trade, follow all company safety policies, and communicate any unsafe conditions, accidents, or injuries in a timely manner to the Project Manager and Safety Manager to facilitate prompt correction or reporting.

Travel to job sites throughout Houston and the surrounding metro area using company navigational tools; familiarity with the greater Houston area is required.

Work a rotating Saturday on-call schedule as assigned.

Attend special training and familiarization workshops dealing with innovations in heavy equipment operation, repair, and maintenance as required.

Perform other duties and projects as assigned.
Requirements & Qualifications

High school diploma or GED required.

Minimum of five (5) years of experience troubleshooting, repairing, maintaining, lubricating, and operating heavy machinery such as excavators, dozers, skid steers, front-end loaders, tractors, motor graders, and trenching machines.

Must furnish own hand tools appropriate to the trade.

Skilled in the care and use of hand and power tools employed in all phases of heavy equipment mechanical maintenance and repair work.

Ability to accurately diagnose defects in heavy-duty equipment, including hydraulic, electrical, ignition, and drive train systems.

Ability to make skillful, controlled manipulations of small objects and components to repair equipment, including in areas of limited space.

Ability to perform incidental welding operations on equipment in the field.

Strong working knowledge of the operation and maintenance requirements of heavy-duty construction equipment.

Valid Texas driver's license, acceptable motor vehicle record (MVR), and current auto insurance required.

Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.

Must be authorized to work in the United States and able to pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check in accordance with company policy and applicable law.
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

Substantial repetitive movements of the wrists, hands, and fingers; manual dexterity sufficient to reach and handle items, work with the fingers, and perceive attributes of objects and materials.

Ability to work outdoors in hot environments and extreme weather conditions typical of Gulf Coast construction sites.

Physically exerting work including walking, standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, and exerting up to 90 pounds of force occasionally to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.

Moderate to strenuous daily physical activity of a primarily technical/mechanical nature, including raising objects from lower to higher positions and moving objects horizontally from position to position.

Visual acuity requirements include color vision, depth perception, and field of vision consistent with work around trucks, forklifts, cranes, and high-lift equipment.

Ability to perceive the nature of sounds, with or without correction, to receive detailed information through oral communication and to make fine discriminations in sound, such as when making fine adjustments to equipment or machines.

Ability to manipulate tools in confined or limited spaces.
