We are seeking a highly organized and reliable Fisheries Monitoring Support Specialist to assist with the administration, distribution, and quality control of commercial fisherman logbooks at the Southeast Fisheries Science Center (SEFSC) Miami Lab. In this role, you will play a critical part in managing incoming data from Highly Migratory Species, Coastal Fisheries, and the Wreckfish fishery, ensuring commercial fishers have the proper documentation to remain compliant with federal regulations.
The ideal candidate possesses strong data management skills, attention to detail for processing high volumes of regulatory forms, and excellent customer service skills to interact with industry permit holders.
Core Responsibilities
- Logbook Administration & Distribution: Handle the annual distribution of commercial logbooks via U.S. mail to existing permit holders. Ensure permit holders receive the correct logbook types and that those selected for supplemental data collections (such as economic or bycatch reporting) receive the appropriate forms and notifications.
- Mail Logistics: Coordinate local travel via a Government Owned Vehicle (GOV) to the post office on designated days to retrieve incoming logbook mail.
- Data Processing & Quality Control: Process incoming logbooks by stamping them as received, organizing forms, and assigning schedule numbers. Perform data entry and formal validation for various logbook and dealer reporting forms.
- Industry Customer Service: Monitor a dedicated business phone line to assist permit holders who have questions regarding the logbook process. Respond to industry inquiries professionally or escalate complex questions to upper-level staff.
- Wreckfish Fishery Management: Package and mail specialized Wreckfish logbook and dealer reporting forms to permit holders annually. Input and process Wreckfish logbooks and dealer reports between December and January within strict programmatic windows.
- Public Outreach: Participate in SEFSC-sponsored outreach events—such as Open Houses and Youth/Career Fairs—to explain commercial logbook program goals and methods to the general public.
Qualifications & RequirementsEssential:
- Education: B.S. Degree in Marine Science, Biology, or a closely related field of study, OR a minimum of three (3) years of equivalent relevant professional experience.
- Technical Proficiency: Computer literate with proven experience using common word processing, database, statistical, and graphics programs.
- Security: Must possess a valid driver's license to operate government vehicles and be able to pass a federal low-risk background investigation to secure a Department of Commerce identification badge.
Desirable:
- Prior experience collecting, entering, or processing catch and effort information derived from commercial fishers.
- Familiarity with regulatory documentation or data management pipelines in federal or state environmental agencies.
Pay: $45,000.00 - $68,000.00 per year
