Position Summary:
The City College of New York Continuing and Professional Studies serves a diverse ESL student population with the aim of providing sound academic education that can prepare students to pursue academic degrees, trainings and prepare them for the workforce.
Our department is currently seeking a Part-Time English as a Second Language (ESL) instructor in its WIOA grant-funded Adult Education Program.
Responsibilities:
The instructor should perform these duties in a way that exhibits cultural sensitivity and attention to individual students needs.
- The desire to help others succeed in their career goal
- Able to teach in person and/or online via Zoom video conferencing (as needed)
- Able to use Google Classroom
- Create a syllabus following a contextualized curriculum approved by the department which includes teaching reading, writing, grammar and oral skills
- Best Plus English language proficiency assessment certified, renew certification or become certified
- Available to conduct pre/post Best Plus test at the start and end of each semester
- Incorporate CUNY Framework and Career kits into the curricula
- Create supplementary material that supports and extends the curriculum
- Evaluate and conference with students regarding homework, test grades, upcoming events, and their class progress
- Ensure that the quality and quantity of instruction provided in the classroom are consistent with the stated objectives of the program
- Maintain a daily record of student attendance in accordance with school policy
- Implement data collection, entry and reporting procedures for students' assessments, attendance, and other areas each semester
- Ensure that the classroom and school's atmosphere is conducive to maximum learning and retention of students
- Have the ability to communicate effectively with culturally and intellectually diverse students and create an engaging learning environment for students.
- create an energetic and interactive classroom environment that offers multiple opportunities for active learning.
- Collaborate with the Program Director on changes and updates affecting the class
- Attend monthly staff meetings
- Required to complete 14 hours of professional development in Adult Education via RAEN workshops each fiscal year
- Responding to administrative deadlines and requests on time
- Other related duties as assigned
Preferred Qualifications:
· Bachelor’s Degree Required in Education or related field; Master's Degree in TESOL or related field strongly preferred
· Must have a minimum of 1 year of teaching experience working in the Adult Education field in the subject areas
· Proficient skills and experience in Microsoft Office computer software systems (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), email, Google Drive, Google Classroom, and Zoom video conferencing
· Bilingual English/Spanish a plus
