POSITION SUMMARY:
The Assistant Shift Engineer (ASE) is responsible for the safe, environmentally sound and efficient daily operation of turbine generator, balance of plant and associated equipment including but not limited to; combustion air fans, stoker, boiler feed pumps, condensate pumps, make-up pumps, cooling tower and associated equipment, turbine lube system, electrical distribution systems, including breakers, transformers, disconnect switches, inverter, storage batteries, Lime Slaking equipment, Demineralized water system and treated water system.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
The ASE follows established operating procedures and does not deviate from these procedures during normal operating conditions except as directed. The ASE performs assigned routine inspections and operational adjustments without close supervision within well-defined boundaries. Specific duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
Supporting the Shift Supervisor and/or Shift Engineer as required.
Oversee turbine and balance of plant equipment
Performs lockout and tag-out of equipment in support of maintenance activities.
Provides assistance to other operators in troubleshooting problems which are not confined to the ASE
Performs daily routine inspections of assigned equipment and completes necessary log sheets according to well-documented procedures.
Performs troubleshooting on equipment and reports all malfunctioning equipment through the issuance of service requests
Performs all plant chemistry tests and takes appropriate action to maintain system within prescribed limits
Performs additional tasks as directed by the Shift Supervisor, or his or her designee.
Keeps assigned areas clean and free of hazards
Outage support as required
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
Must have a sound knowledge and clear understanding of the mechanical characteristics of the equipment and must have demonstrated the ability to apply this knowledge in both routine and non-routine operations.
Must be able to perform general math calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
Must understand the principles of operation and function of turbine-generators and associated equipment, balance of plant equipment, water chemistry principles, and plant electrical distribution and protection.
Must have a high school education or equivalent and must have power plant work-related experience.
Completion of at least one year’s experience as an Auxiliary Equipment Operator or have related outside experience.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Must have a minimum of high school diploma or equivalent
Must have at least one year’s experience as an Auxiliary Operator Power Block or have related outside experience
Must be able to pass respiratory fit testing
Must be able to lift 50 lbs
