This Financial Controller role offers the opportunity to work with a fast-growing financial services platform providing strategic and operational advisory services to venture-backed technology companies. Formation Financial partners with high-growth businesses across SaaS, fintech, healthcare, and related technology sectors, supporting them as they scale their finance and accounting functions.
Role Description
We are seeking a Controller who is comfortable owning accounting operations for multiple sophisticated clients and serving as the primary accounting lead on client engagements. This role requires a hands-on operator who can run core accounting processes while also helping clients implement scalable systems, controls, and reporting as they grow. Responsibilities
- Own day-to-day accounting operations for a portfolio of client companies
- Prepare and review GAAP-compliant financial statements and supporting schedules
- Lead account reconciliations, accruals, and close-related analysis
- Design, implement, and maintain scalable accounting processes and internal controls
- Oversee payroll operations and coordinate benefits and equity-related accounting with providers
- Evaluate, implement, and optimize accounting systems and workflows in collaboration with clients
- Support audit readiness and serve as the primary accounting point of contact for external auditors, investor reviews, and other external diligence as applicable
- Act as a trusted accounting partner to client leadership, proactively identifying issues and recommending improvements
Required Qualifications
The following reflect minimum requirements for this role:
- Bachelor’s degree and Certified Public Accountant certification
- 10+ years of progressive accounting experience
- Prior experience as Controller or senior accounting lead for small to mid-sized companies
- Proven ability to own and execute the monthly close end to end
- Strong command of U.S. GAAP and SaaS accounting fundamentals
- Experience leading an audit process or serving as the primary accounting point of contact
- Comfortable rolling up sleeves when needed, including reconciliations and cleanup work
- Clear written and verbal communication with senior client stakeholders
Preferred Qualifications
Strong preference will be given to candidates demonstrating experience in the following:
- Outsourced accounting, consulting, or multi-client environments
- Support of early-stage or venture-backed startups
- Management of multiple client engagements, balancing competing close timelines and priorities
- Hands-on experience with modern SMB accounting stacks (e.g., Ramp, Rippling, Bill.com, Brex)
