The St. Theresa Extended Day Program (STEP) employee is responsible for providing a safe, welcoming, and engaging environment for students who remain at St. Theresa School after the regular school day. The employee supervises students, facilitates age-appropriate activities, maintains a positive and orderly environment, and supports the mission of St. Theresa School by modeling Christian charity, integrity, and wisdom in interactions with students, families, and colleagues.
This position requires an individual who is dependable, attentive, patient, energetic, and committed to the well-being of children.
Essential Responsibilities
- Provide attentive and active supervision of students at all times.
- Maintain a safe, orderly, and welcoming environment for students.
- Follow all school safety, security, emergency, and student supervision procedures.
- Check students in and out according to established school procedures and release students only to authorized individuals.
- Encourage students to participate positively and respectfully in activities.
- Assist students with homework and provide a quiet environment for completing schoolwork when appropriate.
- Reinforce school expectations for respectful behavior, appropriate language, cooperation, and care for school property.
- Respond to student behavior calmly and consistently and follow the school's discipline and behavior-management procedures.
- Monitor student transitions, bathroom use, outdoor play, and other activities to ensure appropriate supervision.
- Maintain awareness of student medical, allergy, and other safety information as provided by the school.
- Communicate promptly with the appropriate school administrator regarding injuries, accidents, behavioral concerns, or other significant incidents.
- Maintain accurate attendance and dismissal records.
- Keep program spaces clean, organized, and ready for use.
- Assist with cleanup at the conclusion of the program each day.
- Communicate professionally and courteously with parents and guardians during student pickup.
- Protect student confidentiality and follow all school policies regarding student information and communication.
- Work cooperatively with teachers, administrators, and other STEP employees.
- Complete required training and comply with all Archdiocese of Chicago and St. Theresa School requirements for working with children.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Previous experience working with children preferred.
- Experience in a school, childcare, camp, recreation, or similar setting is beneficial.
- Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with students, parents, and school personnel.
- Ability to remain calm, patient, and attentive in an active environment.
- Ability to work independently while also functioning effectively as part of a team.
- Strong sense of responsibility and reliability.
- Commitment to maintaining a safe environment for children.
- Must successfully complete all required background checks, training, and child-safety requirements.
Physical Requirements
The employee must be able to:
- Remain actively engaged in supervising children for extended periods.
- Move throughout classrooms, hallways, playgrounds, and other program areas.
- Participate in and supervise indoor and outdoor activities.
- Respond appropriately to student needs and emergencies.
- Lift or move classroom and activity materials as needed.

This position has an hourly range of $15.00 - $17.00. An employee’s pay within the range will be based on many factors including but not limited to: relevant education, qualifications, experience, skills, geographic location, and organizational needs.
