Position Overview
A private household in Northeast Florida is seeking a compassionate, dependable, and engaging Live-In Companion and Household Caretaker to support an older adult experiencing early-stage memory decline.
The primary purpose of this role is to help the principal maintain independence, dignity, routine, social connection, and quality of life while providing consistent companionship, gentle supervision, household support, and meaningful daily engagement.
This is not a 24-hour active caregiving position. The principal remains independent in many aspects of daily living and generally sleeps independently throughout the night. The selected candidate will provide a reassuring live-in presence while assisting with daytime routines, meals, activities, appointments, transportation, household responsibilities, and communication with the family.
The ideal candidate is warm, emotionally intelligent, organized, patient, and genuinely interested in building a meaningful long-term relationship.
Schedule
This is a live-in position requiring consistent availability six days per week.
A typical day will generally include:
- Morning routine beginning at approximately 9:00 a.m.
- Meal preparation and shared meals
- Household organization and errands
- Exercise, activities, appointments, or social outings
- Evening meal and routine
- General availability until approximately 10:00 p.m.
Overnight caregiving is not ordinarily required, although occasional assistance may be necessary in unusual circumstances.
Scheduled Weekly Time Off
The caregiver will generally receive:
- One evening off each week, approximately 4:30 p.m.–9:30 p.m.
- Sundays from approximately 11:00 a.m.–8:00 p.m.
- Eight weeks of paid vacation annually (2 weeks off occurring quarterly).
Family members will provide coverage during scheduled time off. Vacation will generally coincide with periods when the principal is traveling or staying with family and will be coordinated in advance.
Primary ResponsibilitiesCompanionship and Emotional Support
- Provide consistent, attentive, and respectful companionship

- Provide reassurance during moments of confusion, frustration, or anxiety
- Encourage independence while remaining available to provide support
- Help maintain predictable routines that promote stability and comfort
- Support the principal’s identity, preferences, interests, and personal dignity
- Recognize when to offer assistance and when to allow appropriate independence
- Develop a trusting professional relationship while maintaining clear boundaries
Daily Living Support
- Assist with the organization of daily routines
- Provide medication reminders only; medication administration is not required
- Encourage regular meals, hydration, movement, and rest
- Offer gentle reminders and cueing when appropriate
- Preparation for outings, and organizing personal items when needed
- Observe changes in appetite, sleep, mood, cognition, mobility, or general well-being
- Promptly communicate significant changes or concerns to designated family members
- Help maintain a safe, organized, and comfortable daily environment
Meal Planning and Preparation
- Plan and prepare nutritious, appealing meals and snacks
- Prepare and share meals with the principal when appropriate
- Accommodate established dietary preferences and restrictions
- Create grocery lists and complete grocery shopping
- Monitor food and household inventory
- Encourage appropriate hydration throughout the day
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized kitchen
- Dispose of expired food and replenish frequently used items
- Prepare simple meals for visiting family members or guests when requested
Social Engagement and Community Connection
Maintaining social connection is an important component of this position. Responsibilities include:
- Coordinate social visits, lunches, coffee outings, and community activities
- Accompany the principal to social gatherings and recreational outings
- Help maintain established friendships and meaningful routines
- Welcome occasional visitors into the residence
- Assist with planning small gatherings or visits
- Encourage participation without creating pressure or overstimulation
- Help prevent isolation by maintaining an appropriate and enjoyable social schedule
Cognitive and Recreational Engagement
Plan and encourage activities that support cognitive health, creativity, movement, purpose, and enjoyment.
Activities may include:
- Walking and gentle exercise
- Swimming or supervised pool time
- Reading
- Music
- Painting and creative projects
- Games, puzzles, and memory-supportive activities
- Gardening
- Birdwatching and outdoor activities
- Visits to parks, museums, libraries, or community events
- Simple household projects
- Activities based on the principal’s interests, energy level, and abilities
The caregiver should be creative and proactive without imposing an overly rigid or demanding schedule.
Household Care and Organization
- Perform routine household tidying and light housekeeping
- Maintain clean and organized common areas
- Complete personal and household laundry
- Change linens and maintain bedroom and bathroom organization
- Organize clothing, personal items, and frequently used household supplies
- Keep walkways and living areas free from unnecessary hazards
- Monitor household inventory and purchase supplies as needed
- Receive deliveries and coordinate household service appointments
- Notify the family of maintenance concerns or household issues
- Coordinate with vendors, maintenance providers, and other household professionals
- Help maintain an orderly, comfortable, and welcoming residence
This position includes routine household support but is not intended to replace periodic deep-cleaning or specialized maintenance services.
Calendar and Appointment Coordination
- Maintain an organized personal and household calendar
- Schedule and confirm appointments
- Provide reminders and assist with appointment preparation
- Coordinate medical, personal, wellness, and social engagements
- Communicate appointment details and schedule changes to family members
- Maintain records of important dates, activities, and follow-up items
- Assist with planning family visits, household services, and community activities
Transportation and Errands
- Drive the principal to appointments, errands, activities, and social engagements
- Complete grocery shopping, pharmacy pickups, returns, and household errands
- Assist with safe community navigation
- Maintain reliable and punctual transportation
- Track approved household and care-related purchases
- Submit receipts or expense records as requested
- Keep the vehicle clean and notify the family of maintenance concerns when using a household vehicle
Travel Support
- Accompany the principal during domestic travel when requested
- Assist with packing, unpacking, itineraries, and transportation logistics
- Help maintain familiar routines while traveling
- Coordinate personal items, medications, appointments, and activities
- Provide companionship and general support throughout the trip
- Communicate with family members regarding travel schedules and needs
All approved travel-related expenses will be covered by the household.
Safety and Observation
- Ensure the principal is not left alone for extended periods outside agreed-upon circumstances
- Observe changes in cognition, behavior, mobility, appetite, sleep, or physical health
- Identify and communicate potential safety concerns
- Provide calm guidance during periods of confusion or anxiety
- Assist with safe transportation and community navigation
- Follow emergency procedures established by the family
- Contact the appropriate family member promptly when concerns arise
- Document incidents or meaningful changes when requested
Communication Expectations
The caregiver will maintain regular, professional communication with designated family representatives regarding:
- Daily activities and outings
- Meals, hydration, and appetite
- Sleep and energy levels
- Mood and emotional well-being
- Changes in memory or cognition
- Appointments and medical concerns
- Household needs and maintenance issues
- Social engagement
- Any incidents, unusual behavior, or safety concerns
Communication should be clear and proactive without unnecessarily alarming family members over minor routine matters.
Candidate Qualifications
- At least five years of relevant professional experience preferred
- Experience supporting older adults with dementia, memory loss, or cognitive decline strongly preferred
- Prior experience as a senior companion, live-in caregiver, household manager, family assistant, nurse, teacher, social worker, occupational therapy professional, or similar role
- CNA, LPN, nursing, dementia-care, or related certification preferred but not required
- Experience working in a private household is beneficial
- Valid driver’s license
- Clean and insurable driving record
- Reliable and confident driver
- Willingness and ability to travel
- Comfortable working evenings and weekends
- Comfortable residing in the employer’s home
- Current CPR and First Aid certification preferred
- Ability to complete household tasks, errands, walking, and routine physical activity
- Ability to pass comprehensive background, reference, employment, and driving-record checks
- Legal authorization to work in the United States

- Discuss the family’s private affairs with unauthorized individuals
- Share schedules, travel plans, health information, or identifying details
- Invite unauthorized guests into the residence
Confidentiality expectations remain in effect during and after employment.
Living Accommodations
The selected candidate will receive private live-in accommodations within the residence, including:
- Private bedroom in a separate wing

- Appropriate personal privacy during designated off-duty periods
The caregiver is expected to maintain the private living area in a clean and orderly condition.

Initial Evaluation Period
The position will begin with a six-month evaluation period to ensure the arrangement is appropriate for the principal, family, and caregiver.
During this period, the family and caregiver will conduct regular check-ins regarding:
- Quality of the relationship

- Schedule and workload
- Emotional well-being
- Effectiveness of routines and activities
- Household responsibilities
- Changes in the principal’s needs
- Long-term suitability of the arrangement
Responsibilities, scheduling, and compensation may be reviewed as the principal’s needs evolve.
Measures of Success
Success in this position means:

- Independence is preserved for as long as reasonably possible.
- Daily routines, meals, appointments, activities, and household needs remain organized.
- Social relationships and community involvement are maintained.
