Overview
This position offers an exciting opportunity to make a meaningful impact on children while gaining valuable experience in education and special education. Bridges Academy Austin is a small K-12th grade school specializing in dyslexia, and we are seeking an enthusiastic and skilled instructional assistant to add to the team.
Duties
- Supervise students during recess, lunch, transitions, classroom activities, specials, arrival, and dismissal to maintain a safe and organized environment.
- Provide one-on-one or small group instruction to reinforce learning concepts in literacy, math, or other core subjects tailored to individual student needs.
- Support classroom teachers across subjects; substitute teach if teachers are absent.
- Assist with general school needs, such as bulletin board decorating, organizing, photocopying, and prepping materials.
- Participate in the setup and break down for school events, such as the book fair, back-to-school night, and tabling events.
- Use computers to facilitate learning, track student progress, read your schedule, access emergency contacts, check email, etc.
- Maintain accurate records of activities, attendance, and incidents.
- Collaborate with teachers, specialists, and administration; be collegial with all staff, students, and parents.
- Assist and provide instruction within the scope of your expertise, as assigned, primarily to students with learning disabilities or giftedness.
- Possibly provide child care during events or right after school, and dismiss them to their parents or guardians.
- Possibly provide personal care to a student with special needs.
- Coordinate with colleagues and other professionals; participate in staff meetings and professional learning opportunities; work on committees; demonstrate collegiality; evaluate curriculum.
- Abide by all school policies and federal and state laws, including but not limited to responsibilities as a mandated reporter of child abuse and neglect.
- Follow TEA’s ethical guidelines for teachers.
- Maintain a drug-free work environment.
- Other duties as assigned.
Skills
- Strong understanding of supervision of students.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively manage behavior positively
- Ability to help students with academic skill development, as assigned
- First Aid, CPR, AED, Epi-Pens, Inhalers, etc.
- Following multi-step directions
- Ability to problem-solve and work independently, as needed
- Ability to be flexible and work in a fast-paced, dynamic setting
- Ability to use email, Google Drive, and other programs on the computer for instructional support and recordkeeping purposes
- Ability to use a photocopy machine and other school/office technology to copy, make packets, or do other prep work.
- Fluent English
- Prior classroom experience in schools is preferred
Physical & Emotional Demands:
- Constant hearing, seeing, and speaking.

This is a great position for an education major to gain real-world teaching experience. This is also a wonderful position for elementary school teachers who prefer more work-life balance or teachers who are retired. The position could be part-time or full-time, so it's an opportunity to work during the school day.
