Position Overview
At George Cunningham Company, our Commercial Systems Specialists represent the highest level of technical expertise within our organization. This position is reserved for professionals who possess exceptional diagnostic abilities across both residential and commercial HVAC systems while specializing in complex commercial mechanical equipment.
The Commercial Systems Specialist serves as the company's senior field technician, technical mentor, and trusted advisor for both customers and fellow team members. They are expected to diagnose and resolve the most difficult HVAC, controls, electrical, and mechanical issues while providing leadership, coaching, and technical support to the entire service department.

Primary Responsibilities Advanced Technical Diagnostics
- Diagnose and repair complex commercial and residential HVAC systems.
- Troubleshoot rooftop packaged units from all major manufacturers.
- Diagnose chilled water systems, pumps, valves, piping, and hydronic equipment.
- Troubleshoot air-cooled and water-cooled chillers.
- Diagnose Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) and motor control systems.
- Troubleshoot Building Automation Systems (BAS) and communicating controls.
- Perform advanced electrical diagnostics up to 480V three-phase equipment.
- Commission newly installed commercial HVAC equipment.
- Identify root causes rather than simply replacing failed components.
- Provide complete system performance evaluations and recommendations.

Technical Leadership
As the senior technical leader in the field, this position is expected to:
- Serve as the primary technical resource for all field technicians.
- Provide phone support to technicians requiring advanced diagnostic assistance.
- Assist technicians in developing diagnostic strategies rather than simply providing answers.
- Conduct field visits when advanced support is required.
- Mentor apprentice and developing technicians through ride-alongs and coaching.
- Demonstrate proper diagnostic procedures and best practices.
- Assist management in evaluating technician skill development.
- Help develop technical training materials and hands-on workshops.
- Promote a culture of continuous learning and accountability.
Customer Experience
- Professionally explain findings in language customers can understand.
- Present repair and replacement options using the George Cunningham Company Comfort Prescription process.
- Build trust through education, honesty, and professionalism.
- Recommend repairs that are in the customer's best interest.
- Maintain exceptional customer satisfaction.

Operational Responsibilities
- Complete all work orders accurately and promptly.
- Document diagnostics thoroughly.
- Complete Red-Yellow-Green (RYG) inspections on every service call.
- Build comprehensive repair recommendations.
- Ensure proper startup and commissioning procedures are followed.
- Maintain truck inventory and specialized diagnostic tools.
- Follow all company safety policies.
- Assist in warranty investigations and manufacturer technical communications when necessary.
On-Call Responsibilities
As a senior member of the service department, the Commercial Systems Specialist is expected to:
- Participate in the rotating emergency on-call schedule.
- Respond to critical commercial service emergencies after hours.
- Provide technical support to on-call technicians during evenings and weekends.
- Assist with major equipment failures requiring senior-level expertise.
- Help ensure emergency response standards are maintained throughout the organization.

Minimum Qualifications
- 5+ years of HVAC service experience.
- Minimum 3 years commercial service experience.
- Expert diagnostic abilities.
- Strong electrical troubleshooting skills.
- Advanced refrigeration knowledge.
- Strong understanding of airflow and psychrometrics.
- Ability to interpret electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.
- Knowledge of commercial controls.
- Experience with VFD programming and diagnostics.
- Experience with chilled water systems.
- Ability to diagnose hydronic systems.
- Strong communication and leadership skills.
- Valid Texas Driver License with acceptable driving record.
- EPA Universal Certification (Required).
