SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Director of Safe School Environments, the position is responsible for functioning in a hybrid capacity. It is expected the position will serve a dual role, as both a Campus Security Officer (CSO) and as an Armed Security Patrol Officer (SPO), by providing leadership and expertise to the on-site security team and school based administrative staff. The position, as part of its duties, will be responsible for coordinating safety, security, and logistical issues associated with monitoring and assessing school activities to ensure the safety and security of students, staff and visitors.

Campus Security Patrol Officer (CSPO) must wear the Department of School Safety approved uniform, including both a "soft" and "hard" uniform.
Act as first responder to any lockdown, lockout, disturbance, or disorderly calls related to students, parents, and staff on site. Position is subject to frequent site reassignment, based on critical needs in the District.
Ensure the implementation of building security strategies on a daily basis.
Assist Campus Security Coordinators in creating schedules for campus security officers and campus supervisors, ensuring security needs are met at the individual site.
Review all incident reports, documentation, and evidence collected by Campus Supervisors and/or CSOs. Unless time does not permit, this should be accomplished before the campus security personnel submit the report to administrative staff and law enforcement.
Work in collaboration with school Principals to make security related recommendations, which may impact the security budget at their assigned school for the school year.
Provide input on security equipment needs, dress apparel required, and/or other safety items that need obtained to provide a safe and secure learning environment.
Train newly hired campus security personnel and/or SPOs, utilizing their assigned building as a training and on-boarding at assigned site.
Provide leadership and act as a mentor to all campus security personnel at their assigned school.
Work closely with the Director of Safe School Environments, the Manager of Patrol Operations, Patrol Sergeants and Campus Security Coordinators regarding safety preparedness (i.e. student/staff identification, drills, safety plans).
Communicate with all first responders, Director, Manager, Sergeants and Coordinators, parents and others in crisis situations, criminal events on site, and medical emergencies.
Effective communication skills are necessary to use two-way radio systems for immediate communication with schools, Department of School Safety personnel, and first responder agencies.
Perform background research in collaboration with Director, Manager, Sergeants and Coordinators and/or Special Judicial Services on all new students who come in from group homes, who may be on probation/parole or who have known incidents from other schools.
Attend all security meetings at the building level; reporting relevant information back to the Coordinators and Sergeants, while including the appropriate building level staff.
Maintain a secure perimeter. Check and monitor all exterior doors. Document and log any and all problematic exterior entrances/exits to the Principal, Sergeant, and Campus Security Coordinator.
Temporarily detain trespassers or law violators on-site until arrival of a law enforcement officer, utilizing law, policy and ethical guidelines.
Respond to alarms and dispatched calls; decide what actions to take based on situation, facts known and position limitations. Acts as a point of contact for teachers regarding students, the school and other issues pertaining to the safety and well being related to the school site and students.
Assist responding police officers in the conduct of their investigations by contacting necessary District personnel, opening doors, turning off/on alarm systems, etc.
Assist school Administration with conducting informational sessions for faculty, staff, and community members on security related issues and topics.
Act as a mediator to students, their parents, school staff, and unauthorized visitors. Administer warnings to students, refer them to building administrators for disciplinary actions, or partner with law enforcement if criminal charges are warranted.
Act as a liaison between the Department of School Safety and Jeffco Schools with outside persons and agencies including parents, businesses, and all surrounding law enforcement and fire jurisdictions.
In coordination with Director, Manager, Sergeants, Coordinators, and building administration, serve as a primary contact for appropriate Safe2Tell reports associated with the assigned location.
Work closely with the School Resource Officer, local law enforcement, as well as their corresponding K-9 units in the coordination of drug/bomb sweeps at the school location.
Assist School Resources Officer at school location when required.
When required, attend court hearings which are a direct result from a school related arrest.
Attend all building level threat assessments and coordinate with the Director, the Manager, Sergeants, and Coordinators regarding district level threat assessment, suicide risk assessments, and/or expulsion hearings.
Attend all Department training, regardless of normal work shift, to maintain preparedness and certifications.
Comprehensive knowledge or the ability to acquire knowledge of District Policies and Procedural Practices. The site-based CSPO will have a clear understanding of the Student Code of Conduct.
Perform other critical safety and security related duties as assigned by the Director of Safe School Environments, Patrol Commander and or Executive Director of School Safety.
OFF SCHOOL YEAR DUTIES-
Training with both Campus Supervisor and Patrol teams
Work with Coordinator team to plan team trainings
Patrol support during the work day where and when necessary
Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING: High school diploma/GED required, plus a minimum of one year of course work in the area(s) of criminal justice, sociology, psychology, communications, education, and/or child/youth development. Course work may be replaced by demonstrated experience and training representative of the same knowledge and abilities. The position requires active certification in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (CPI), first aid/CPR/AED, and FEMA Incident Command for Schools.
EXPERIENCE: Minimum of three years' experience working directly in a criminal justice or security related field. It is preferred for the applicant to have experience working directly with youth. The position requires excellent skills in verbal communication; problem identification and problem solving; negotiation and mediation; and behavior modification and management.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, & EQUIPMENT: Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Leadership, management skill, and the ability to develop and maintain interpersonal relationships. Ability to intervene in physical altercations and/or physically restrain individuals. Ability to manage multiple priorities and tasks with frequent interruptions. Ability to work well with a wide variety people, including customer service and public relations skill. The site-based CSPO should possess excellent problem identification and solving skills. The site-based CSPO should have the ability to effectively handle multiple tasks under stressful conditions. Ability to perform job responsibilities under limited supervision. Prompt work attendance is required. Employee must be proficient with personal computers, common office applications such as Microsoft Office and Google Docs, and become familiar with District video surveillance software. New employees must pass background investigation prior to hire and a pre-employment psychological and physical assessment while existing employees applying for this position must complete an approved psychological and physical assessment.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, & REGISTRATIONS: Must maintain valid Colorado driver's license with good driving history (must provide driving record) at time of hire. Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) and Pressure Point Control Tactics (PPCT) training, plus first aid, CPR, and AED as well as Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (CPI) and FEMA Incident Command for Schools required for hire. Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) and Crisis Intervention Team Youth (CIT-Y), leadership training, Tactical Casualty Care (TCC), single officer active shooter and/or Rapid and Immediate Deployment (RAID) training and/or relevant certifications preferred. Officers are required to successfully complete quarterly firearms training and/or proficiency qualifications. Officers are expected to successfully complete a forty (40) hour arrest control tactics course annually, as well as a RAID and active shooter training.
SUPERVISION/TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITY: The site-based CSPO provides day-to-day direction to the Campus Security Officers/Campus Supervisors and may provide input to evaluations. Responsibilities include interviewing, training, planning, assigning, and directing work, addressing complaints and resolving problems.
CONTACTS: Daily contact with persons at school site, parents, and others to resolve problems and negotiate controversial or confidential matters and with law enforcement personnel and the general public to furnish or obtain information.
SAFETY TO SELF AND OTHERS: Low exposure to self from disease from blood borne pathogens. Low exposure to self, students and public due to bruises, cuts, fractured bones from confrontation; burns (heat) from fire and hernia from confrontation. There is medium exposure to self from potential threats or responding to significant crisis events.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places, and fumes or airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

JUDGMENT AND DECISION MAKING: Work is assigned by the Director of Safe School Environments with consultation by the Manger of Patrol Operations, Patrol Sergeants, Campus Security Coordinator, self and the administrative staff. This position requires application of Board, school, and state/federal policies, procedures, and/or laws to maintain a safe learning environment, to quickly recognize dangerous/urgent situations, to recommend student disciplinary actions when necessary, to notify and coordinate with emergency personnel when required, and to adequately document incidents. Decision making requires collaboration with coworkers, administrative team, parents, and community agencies and members. Errors in decision making could compromise student safety and life if incidents are not responded to quickly and effectively. The site-based CSPO must be able to make clear and concise decisions in a stressful and changing environment. The site-based CSPO will be involved in the decision-making process.
