Experienced Barista with Shift Lead Potential

Pay: $15–$17/hour + tips
Schedule: Part-time, approximately 25-30 hours/week
Availability Needed: Day, evening and late-night availability, including shifts between 4:00 PM and 1:00 AM
Pitango Gelato & Coffee in Old Town Alexandria is looking for an experienced, reliable, and customer-focused barista to join our team.
This position is ideal for someone who already has a strong foundation in espresso, milk steaming, drink building, and customer service — and who is interested in growing with us. Latte art experience is preferred, but we are happy to train and refine those skills for the right person. You should already understand the basic concepts of milk texture, espresso quality, and drink presentation.
This role combines espresso service, gelato service, customer hospitality, and potential shift leadership. We are looking for someone who is excited to work across the full café experience, not just behind the espresso bar.
For the right candidate, this position may grow into a Shift Lead role. Previous management, supervisor, or shift lead experience is a strong plus, but we are also open to training a great barista who shows maturity, reliability, communication skills, and leadership potential.
What You’ll Do
As an Experienced Barista with Shift Lead Potential, you will:
- Prepare high-quality espresso drinks, coffee beverages, and café items
- Steam milk properly and work toward consistent latte art presentation
- Scoop and serve gelato and sorbet with care, consistency, and strong product knowledge
- Educate guests about our gelato, sorbet, coffee, and ingredients
- Provide warm, professional, and upbeat customer service
- Support both the coffee bar and gelato counter during busy service periods
- Help keep the café clean, organized, stocked, and guest-ready
- Assist with opening, closing, and shift flow as needed
- Handle busy rushes with professionalism and urgency
- Demonstrate leadership habits, including communication, accountability, and problem-solving
We’re Looking For Someone Who Is
- Experienced as a barista, preferably with at least 1 year of espresso bar experience
- Comfortable with basic latte art concepts or willing to improve with training
- Friendly, professional, and genuinely guest-focused
- Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently
- Available for day, evening and late-night shifts, including shifts that may end as late as 1:00 AM
- Flexible with scheduling, including weekends
- Mature, responsible, and comfortable working in a fast-paced environment
- Interested in learning, growing, and possibly stepping into a Shift Lead role
- Able to lift up to 25 lbs and remain on your feet during busy shifts
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous shift lead, supervisor, or management experience
- Strong customer service background
- ServSafe certification or willingness to obtain certification
- Experience working in a café, coffee shop, restaurant, bakery, gelato shop, or fast-paced hospitality environment
- Availability outside of a typical school schedule
- Ideally, we are looking for someone 18+ or able to meet late-night scheduling requirements
