Job Overview
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Rodman/Instrument Person to join our surveying team. In this role, you will be instrumental in supporting land surveying projects by operating and maintaining surveying instruments, assisting with construction layout surveys, and ensuring precise data collection. Responsibilities
- Assist surveyors with setting up, calibrating, and operating surveying equipment such as total stations, GPS systems, 3D scanners, and LiDAR devices to gather accurate spatial data.
- Support construction staking efforts by marking reference points and verifying layout accuracy according to schematics and engineering plans.
- Perform utility locating to identify underground utilities using specialized tools and ensure safe excavation practices.
- Conduct field surveys including topographic, ALTA (American Land Title Association), and land boundary surveys using GPS, total stations, and other field instruments.
- Collect, record, and analyze survey data with CAD software such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, MicroStation, Revit, Carlson, and ArcGIS to prepare detailed maps and schematics.
- Assist with the operation of hand tools and heavy lifting equipment necessary for fieldwork while adhering to safety protocols.
- Maintain all surveying equipment in proper working order through routine inspections and calibration; ensure accurate data collection for project documentation.
Experience
- Prior experience or training in land surveying or civil engineering is preferred but not mandatory; on-the-job training will be provided for motivated candidates.
- Familiarity with surveying equipment operation including total stations, GPS/GNSS systems (Trimble or similar), laser scanners, levels, and data collectors is highly desirable.
- Knowledge of trigonometry, geometry, algebra, and math fundamentals essential for understanding survey calculations and data analysis.
- Experience with CAD drafting software such as AutoCAD or Civil 3D for creating survey drawings is a plus.
- Ability to interpret schematics, legal descriptions, construction plans, and topographic maps accurately.
- Strong fieldwork skills including construction layout surveys, topographic mapping, and data collection are required.
- Physical ability for heavy lifting, standing for long periods, and working outdoors in varying weather conditions is necessary.
