Summary:
The Director of Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery is responsible for the overall administration, operations, financial management, maintenance, development, and pastoral care functions of the cemetery. The Director ensures that the cemetery operates in a manner consistent with the teachings, mission, and values of the Catholic Church while providing compassionate service to families during times of loss.
The Director develops and implements approved policies, programs, and procedures to ensure effective operations, financial stability, regulatory compliance, and long-term stewardship of cemetery property and resources.
The Director is also responsible for developing and promoting charitable giving opportunities and building the cemetery endowment to provide perpetual care and long-term financial security for Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
Responsibilities:
Leadership and Administration
· Serve as a member of the Diocesan Pastoral Center staff and carry out responsibilities in accordance with diocesan policies, procedures, and directives.
· Provide leadership and supervision to cemetery employees and volunteers.
· Recommend organizational structure, staffing needs, and operational improvements.
· Develop, recommend, and implement policies, procedures, and best practices that support the mission and goals of the cemetery.
· Prepare administrative reports and evaluate operational effectiveness.
Pastoral Care and Customer Service
· Provide compassionate and respectful service to grieving families, funeral directors, clergy, and visitors.
· Assist families with burial, entombment, and inurnment arrangements.
· Support the scheduling and coordination of funerals, committal services, and cemetery-related events.
· Foster positive relationships with plot, niche, and crypt owners and respond to inquiries and concerns in a timely and professional manner.
Financial Management
· Develop and administer the annual cemetery operating and capital budgets.
· Maintain sound financial and accounting controls to ensure fiscal responsibility and transparency.
· Monitor revenues, expenses, investments, and financial performance.
· Oversee purchasing activities and ensure appropriate procurement of equipment, supplies, materials, and services.
· Prepare financial reports and recommendations for diocesan leadership.
Development and Endowment Stewardship
· Develop, implement, and oversee strategies to grow and strengthen the Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery Endowment Fund to ensure the long-term financial stability and sustainability of the cemetery.
· Work collaboratively with the Office of Stewardship and Development, the Catholic Foundation of Utah, diocesan leadership, and cemetery stakeholders to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward endowment donors.
· Develop educational and marketing materials that communicate the mission, purpose, and impact of the cemetery endowment.
· Build and maintain strong relationships with donors, families, parish communities, funeral homes, and community partners to encourage philanthropic support.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Management, Finance, Public Administration, Cemetery Management, or a related field preferred.
- Five or more years of progressive leadership experience in cemetery management, operations, facilities management, business administration, property management, or a related field.
- Experience in budgeting, financial management, personnel supervision, and organizational leadership required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
· Understanding of Catholic teachings, traditions, ethics, and organizational structure.
· Knowledge of cemetery operations, property management, facilities maintenance, and grounds management.
· Familiarity with civil and canonical laws governing cemetery operations.
· Knowledge of construction, landscaping, irrigation systems, water conservation, and equipment maintenance.
· Strong organizational, planning, and project management skills.
· Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
· Ability to exercise sound judgment, maintain confidentiality, and handle sensitive situations with compassion and professionalism.
· Proficiency in Microsoft Office and financial management systems.
· Bilingual a plus.
