About Us
Smith Roofing & Exteriors is a Knoxville-based exterior contractor specializing in roofing, siding, windows, decks and gutters. You will be working to grow and support a dedicated team of 30+ employees.
About the Role
We're hiring our first dedicated HR Generalist — a foundational role for our growing team. You'll build our people function largely from the ground up: designing or improving processes, policies, and programs, while also handling the day-to-day HR needs of our current 32 employees. This is a great fit for someone who enjoys both the strategic "let's build this right" work and the hands-on "let's get this done today" work. You'll report to the owner and partner closely with managers across the company.
What You'll Do
- Recruiting & Onboarding: Own the full-cycle hiring process — job postings, screening, interview coordination, offers — and build a smooth, consistent onboarding experience for new hires.
- HR Process: Build out repeatable processes for the HR lifecycle (hiring, onboarding, offboarding, leave, etc.).
- HR Operations & Compliance: Manage employee records, ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws, and maintain/update employee handbook and policies.
- Performance Management: Help design and standardize our formal performance review process; support managers with coaching, feedback frameworks, and PIPs when needed.
- Culture & Engagement: Plan initiatives with management that strengthen culture as we grow — recognition programs, engagement surveys, team events.
- Compliance & Risk: Keep us current on labor law changes, manage required postings/filings, and reduce legal risk through sound documentation and practice.
- Benefits & Payroll Support: Coordinate with Finance on benefits enrollment and serve as the point of contact for employee questions; partner with finance on payroll-related HR tasks.
- Employee Relations: Serve as a trusted, confidential resource for employees on workplace questions or concerns; help resolve issues fairly and consistently.
What We're Looking For
- 3+ years of experience in an HR generalist, HR coordinator, or similar people-operations role.
- Strong judgment and discretion — you'll be trusted with sensitive, confidential information.
- Excellent communication skills; you can talk comfortably with both entry-level employees and management.
- A builder's mindset — comfortable creating structure and process where none currently exists, without over-engineering for a company our size.
- Bonus: SHRM-CP certification, small-company experience, or experience creating or improving HR functions.
Why This Role Is Different
You won't be one cog in a big HR machine — you'll shape how HR works here. Your contributions on policy, process, and culture will have a direct and visible impact on the whole company. You’ll be welcome addition to a management team that values interdepartmental communication and cooperation. We succeed together.
