Position Summary:
The Directional Boring Operator Supervisor is responsible for leading, coordinating, and supporting field crews and Directional Boring Operators in executing horizontal directional drilling (HDD) projects. This role ensures all utility installations—including fiber optics, electrical conduit, gas lines, water mains, and sewer piping—are completed safely, efficiently, and to exact technical and regulatory specifications.
The Supervisor oversees daily job-site setup, bore path planning, drilling fluid management, utility locating protocols, crew productivity, and quality control, serving as the primary liaison between field operations, project management, and client representatives.
Key Responsibilities:
- Direct, mentor, and evaluate Directional Boring Operators, locators, and support crews on daily field operations.
- Assign daily tasks, establish production targets, and manage crew schedules to ensure project milestones are met on time and within budget.
- Enforce company policies, performance standards, and safe work practices across all assigned work sites.
- Review job site plans, bore profiles, utility prints, and soil/ground reports prior to drilling.
- Provide technical guidance on drilling fluid (mud) formulations, reamer selection, pilot hole steering, and pullback operations across varying ground conditions.
- Verify accurate use of locating equipment (walkover and wireline systems) to guarantee precision placement and pitch control.
- Conduct final quality inspections on pipe/conduit installations to ensure compliance with engineering standards and client specifications.
- Lead daily tailgate safety meetings (JSA/JHA reviews) and enforce strict adherence to OSHA, DOT, and company safety protocols.
- Ensure 100% compliance with utility locate laws (811 ticket verification), potholing/soft-digging mandates, and cross-bore prevention practices.
- Oversee site traffic control setups, environmental controls, and fluid containment/disposal protocols.
- Oversee regular maintenance, pre-trip inspections, and routine servicing of HDD rigs, locators, mud mixing systems, vacuum excavators, and support vehicles.
- Identify equipment repair needs and coordinate prompt maintenance with the shop or field mechanics to minimize downtime.
- Manage job-site materials, tooling inventory, and fuel/water logistics.
- Maintain clear, daily communication with Project Managers, client inspectors, landowners, and municipal authorities.
- Complete and submit daily production logs, bore logs, timecards, safety audits, and incident reports accurately and on time.
- Address on-site troubleshooting, client concerns, or unexpected ground/utility conflicts quickly and professionally.
Qualifications:
- Minimum 5+ years of hands-on experience operating HDD equipment across various pipe sizes and soil conditions.
- Minimum 2+ years in a leadership, supervisory, or crew lead role within underground utility construction.
- Expertise in HDD rig operation, walkover/digitrak locating systems, bore path geometry, and drilling fluid chemistry.
- Proficiency in reading utility prints, civil plans, engineered bore profiles, and 811 locate marks.
- Valid Driver’s License required; Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) preferred or required based on equipment transport needs.
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 Certification preferred.
- First Aid / CPR Certification preferred.
Work Environment:
This is a 100% field-based role. Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions (extreme heat, cold, rain) and on active, loud construction zones.
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and environments.
- Ability to lift up to 50–70 lbs, bend, stand, climb, and perform physical tasks in an active construction environment.
- Willingness to travel to various job sites as required by project demands.
Physical Demands:
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs consistently, stand or walk for extended periods on uneven terrain, and bend, kneel, or crawl in tight spaces.
- Ability to travel regionally to multiple concurrent or rotating project sites as required by the workload.

Pay: $25.00 - $35.00 per hour
