Job Overview
The Schenectady County Department of Economic Planning and Development is currently recruiting for a Senior Geographic Information Specialist*. This is a professional position in the Planning Department responsible for developing and administering documentation, projects, and planning efforts for issues related to county government projects. This class differs from the lower-level positions by virtue of its responsibility for overseeing and coordinating projects. The employee reports directly to and works under the general supervision of the Commissioner of Planning. Supervision is exercised over a technical/clerical staff. Does related work as required. PLEASE NOTE: *This position has been requested as part of the NYS Helps Program, and an exam may not be re quired.
Responsibilities
- Lead the development and maintenance of geographic information systems (GIS) databases using ArcGIS, SQL, and relational databases to ensure accurate spatial data management.
- Oversee land surveying activities utilizing GPS technology and coordinate with field teams to collect precise geospatial data.
- Design and implement data visualization dashboards to communicate complex spatial insights clearly and effectively.
- Develop scripts and automate workflows using Python, JavaScript, Scripting languages, APIs, and SharePoint to streamline data collection, analysis, and reporting processes.
- Collaborate with project teams on construction planning by providing detailed CAD drawings in AutoCAD and drafting support.
- Manage large datasets through data modeling, analysis skills, and database management to support decision-making processes.
- Provide technical leadership in GIS projects, guiding team members on best practices in data analysis, analysis skills, and project management.
Qualifications
Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma, plus EITHER: A. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an *Associate's Degree in Geography, Municipal, Community, or Regional Planning, Engineering Technology, Environmental Science, or Computer Science, plus three (3) years of experience in the municipal planning or engineering field working with data and information analysis, two (2) years of which shall have involved working with Geographic Information Systems and demographic analysis; OR B. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a *Bachelor's De gree in Geography, Municipal, Community or Regional Planning, Engineering, Environmental Science, or Computer Science plus two (2) years of experience as described in (A) above, one (1) year of which shall have involved work ing with Geographic Information Systems and demographic analysis; OR C. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a *Master's Degree in Geography, Municipal, Community or Regional Planning, Engineering, Environmental Science or Computer Sci ence, plus one (1) year of experience as described in (A) above which shall have involved working with Geographic Information Systems and demographic analysis; OR D. An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A), (B), and (C) above.

Pay: $67,873.00 - $80,404.00 per year
