Vertical Earth is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Construction Surveyor to support heavy civil, transportation, grading, utility, and site development projects. The Construction Surveyor is responsible for performing field layout, construction staking, as-built surveys, grade verification, data collection, and quality control activities to ensure projects are built according to design specifications and contract requirements.
This position works closely with project managers, superintendents, foremen, field engineers, and equipment operators to provide accurate survey control and layout throughout all phases of construction.
Essential Responsibilities
- Perform construction staking and layout for roadways, utilities, grading, structures, retaining walls, and other heavy civil construction projects.
- Establish and maintain horizontal and vertical project control.
- Collect field data utilizing GPS, robotic total stations, and other surveying equipment.
- Verify grades, elevations, alignments, and dimensions throughout construction activities.
- Produce and maintain accurate as-built documentation.
- Download, manage, and organize survey data files.
- Interpret construction plans, specifications, and engineering drawings.
- Coordinate survey activities with project teams to support project schedules and production goals.
- Troubleshoot field layout issues and provide solutions in coordination with engineering and operations personnel.
- Perform quantity verification and progress tracking as needed.
- Ensure all survey work complies with company quality standards and project requirements.
- Maintain survey equipment and vehicles in proper working condition.
- Adhere to all company safety policies and OSHA regulations.
QualificationsRequired
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Minimum of 3 years of construction surveying experience preferred.
- Experience performing construction staking and layout on heavy civil, roadway, utility, grading, or transportation projects.
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans and specifications.
- Experience with GPS and robotic total station equipment.
- Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to travel to project sites as required.
Preferred
- Experience using Topcon, Pocket 3D, Trimble Siteworks, Carlson, or similar survey software.
- Experience with machine control systems and digital terrain models.
- Drone pilot license preferred.
- Heavy civil, DOT, bridge, roadway, or utility construction experience.
- Survey Technician, Party Chief, or Land Surveying background.
