Job Overview
The Part-Time Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment at the San Joaquin County Historical Museum. This role supports the daily cleanliness and sanitation of all public spaces, restrooms, and common areas to ensure a positive experience for museum visitors, staff, and volunteers.
The Part-Time Custodian serves as an essential contributor to the Museum’s commitment to providing a well-maintained and professional facility that reflects the standards of the Historical Society & Museum.
This part-time, at-will position will work 15 hours per week, Monday-Friday (overtime and weekend work may be required during special events) and is supervised by the Museum’s Director of Operations or their designee. The position is paid at a rate of $20.00 per hour and is non-exempt, eligible for overtime compensation in accordance with federal and California state wage and hour laws.
Typical Duties
- Perform daily disposal of trash and recycling throughout all interior and exterior public areas of the museum, including galleries, offices, restrooms, and entryways.
- Clean and service all public and staff restrooms on a daily basis, including sanitizing toilets, sinks, and countertops; restocking paper products, soap, and other supplies; and mopping floors.
- Vacuum all carpeted public spaces on a routine scheduled basis, including galleries, lobby areas, and hallways.
- Mop all hard-surface public floors on a routine scheduled basis to maintain cleanliness and safety.
- Clean windows on a routine scheduled basis.
- Monitor supply inventory for cleaning products and restroom consumables; notify supervisor when restocking is needed.
- Report any maintenance issues, safety hazards, or facility concerns (e.g., spills, leaks, broken fixtures) to the supervisor promptly.
- Maintain cleaning equipment in proper working order; store all supplies and equipment in designated areas.
- Adhere to all museum safety guidelines, sanitation standards, and procedures. Attend all required safety training.
- Support additional custodial or light facilities tasks as assigned by the supervisor.
Skills & Requirements
- Prior custodial, janitorial, or facilities maintenance experience strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of proper sanitation practices, cleaning techniques, and safe handling of cleaning chemicals.
- Ability to follow and complete a routine cleaning schedule in a timely manner and work independently with minimal supervision.
- Reliable, punctual, and consistent attendance — dependability is essential to this role.
- Strong attention to detail with a commitment to maintaining high cleanliness standards.
- Ability to communicate effectively with museum staff and notify supervisor of any concerns in a timely manner.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs., stand and walk for extended periods, and perform repetitive physical tasks including bending, kneeling, carrying, and pushing cleaning equipment.
- Must be able to pass a federal background check.
- Valid California driver’s license required.
