Position Overview
STS is seeking experienced Heavy Duty Trailer Technicians to join our Rochester service team. This role is ideal for a skilled, self-directed mechanic with hands-on experience diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining trailers and related truck equipment. The mechanic is responsible for ensuring vehicles and equipment operate safely, reliably, and efficiently while meeting company quality and safety standards. Compensation is competitive and based on experience, skill level, education, and certifications.
Key Responsibilities
- Diagnose and repair trailers and heavy/light-duty truck equipment across a wide range of systems
- Perform structural repairs and custom fabrication on trailer bodies, floors, undercarriages, and door systems
- Execute welding and metal fabrication tasks on steel and aluminum
- Perform preventive maintenance inspections and routine service on trailers and commercial vehicles
- Troubleshoot and repair brake systems, suspension components, hydraulics, electrical systems, and drivetrain components
- Complete repairs independently and within quoted labor times across a wide range of systems, including welding, riveting, metal fabrication, trailer body and floor repairs, and door systems
- Accurately document all work performed, including labor hours and parts used, in the company's internal work order and billing system
- Follow all company safety policies and procedures while maintaining a clean, organized, and safe work environment
Required Qualifications
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record
- Must provide own tools
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with coworkers, management, and customers
Qualifications
- Demonstrated welding experience across varying materials and non-standard repair situations
- Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills related to heavy duty trailers of all types required
- Experience with diesel engines, commercial vehicles, and truck equipment a plus
- NYS Heavy Motor Vehicle Inspector certification preferred
- CDL licensure and/or Cummins diesel certification a plus
Physical & Work Environment Requirements
- Stand, walk, climb, kneel, crouch, and balance for extended periods
- Visually inspect small components and mechanical defects
- Safely operate motor vehicles, machinery, hand tools, and job-specific diagnostic equipment
- Accurately hear and interpret mechanical and technical information in environments with noise and vibration
- Lift and handle materials up to the maximum weight permitted by applicable regulations
- Perform work safely in a fast-paced shop environment, including indoor and outdoor conditions
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $20.00 - $45.00 per hour
