Library Student Employment
Salary: $12.00-$13.00 per hour
I. Position Purpose
Under the direct supervision of the Manager of Library Services, the Library and Academic Success Center Student Assistant provides customer service, operational support, and specialized project assistance within the Library and Academic Success Center. Student employees contribute to creating a welcoming, organized, and productive environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors while gaining valuable experience in customer service, library operations, technology support, and office administration.
II. Duties and Responsibilities
Provide front desk support:
- Perform various customer service tasks, including answering telephone calls and responding to general questions about the Library and Academic Success Center.
- Assist patrons with locating resources, services, and information.
- Handle cash and electronic transactions in accordance with departmental procedures.
- Maintain a professional and welcoming environment for all visitors.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Assist Library and Academic Success Center patrons:
- Assist with library circulation services, including checking materials in and out and processing returns.
- Provide basic assistance with computers, printing services, copiers, scanners, and online resources.
- Support users in accessing Library and Academic Success Center services and resources.
- Refer complex questions or concerns to appropriate staff members.
Perform housekeeping duties:
- Maintain cleanliness and organization throughout the Library and Academic Success Center.
- Wipe down tables and workstations, collect trash, organize public spaces, and perform light sweeping as needed.
- Follow designated opening and closing procedures.
- Report maintenance, safety, or operational concerns to supervisors.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Perform specialized tasks:
- Create and distribute flyers, promotional materials, displays, and other marketing content for Library and Academic Success Center events and programs.
- Assist with library operations, including shelving books, magazines, and other materials according to established procedures.
- Perform data entry, record maintenance, inventory tracking, and other administrative support tasks.
- Assist with special projects, events, outreach activities, and programming initiatives.
- Complete other specialized assignments as directed by Library Services staff.
Professional Development:
- Successfully complete all required training, certifications, and professional development courses assigned by the supervisor, Human Resources, or the College.
- Participate in departmental training and apply learned skills to job responsibilities.
- Demonstrate a commitment to professional growth and continuous improvement.
III. Qualifications – Education, Experience, and Skills
- Must be currently enrolled as a full-time Hocking College student.
- Must be a second-year student.
- Must meet federal requirements for Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP).
- Must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0.
- Strong customer service skills.
- Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and oral/written communication skills.
- Basic computer skills and technology literacy.
- Ability to learn new software systems and campus technologies.
- Promptness, dependability, and professionalism.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality when handling student information.
- Takes initiative and works independently.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- Willingness and ability to complete all required training and professional development assigned by the supervisor, Human Resources, or the College.
