Come do work that matters, with kids who will remember you.
The Bob Burdette Center runs free, year-round after-school programs for children in grades K-5 on Charleston's West Side. Our sites are warm, busy, encouraging places where kids get help with their homework, room to play, and grown-ups who show up for them. We're looking for someone caring with kids and firm when it counts — a leader to run one of our sites and the small team that makes it work.
What this job really is:
You are the person in charge at one of our after-school sites each afternoon — the one who keeps the day running smoothly and makes sure every child is safe, busy, and having a good afternoon. You lead a small team of 2–5 staff, help them run their classrooms well, pass along the lessons our Program Director prepares and make sure they actually happen, and keep the space clean and welcoming. This job takes a big heart and a backbone in equal measure: you're the grown-up the kids trust and look forward to seeing, and you're the leader who sets clear expectations and holds staff and kids to them — firm when the moment calls for it, always fair and never harsh. You report to the Program Director, who has your back and gives you what you need to do the job well. Which of our sites you'll lead is something we settle together, based on where you fit best. Some afternoons are calm and some are happy chaos — the right person takes both in stride.
Who we are hoping to meet:
- Equal parts warm and firm — the kids adore you, and they also know you mean what you say
- A caring leader — you guide and encourage your small team, and you hold them accountable when it's needed
- Steady with a room full of kids — they trust you, and you keep control when it gets loud and lively
- Reliable and present — when you say you'll handle something it gets handled, and the kids and your team can count on you
- Organized enough to keep a site, its lessons, and its little details on track
- Glad to pitch in on whatever the site needs, tidying up included — you take pride in a clean, welcoming space
- Comfortable with the basics on a computer or tablet (email, Google Docs and Sheets, iPad)
The practical must-haves:
- Able to pass a background check, since we serve children in grades K-5
- Authorized to work in the United States
- Comfortable working with children and families from all backgrounds
- Experience leading people or working with children is a plus, but grit and a good heart matter more
The details:
- Part-time, roughly 30 hours per week, in person at one of our West Side after-school sites
- $14 per hour
- A supportive Program Director, a team that pulls together, and the chance to be the steady grown-up a child looks forward to seeing every afternoon
To apply: tell us a little about yourself, and share one short story about a time you stepped up — whether that meant taking charge or taking care of someone. We'd love to hear it.
