Job Summary:
This position safely sets up, positions, aligns, and welds steel components in flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions to build loaders and material handling equipment for the SERCO Loaders product line. Working from blueprints and welding symbols, the Welder produces sound, high-quality welds that meet specifications while following all safety procedures.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Interpret blueprints, welding symbols, and work orders to plan layout, joint preparation, and welding procedures.
- Safely set up and weld steel components and parts together using the appropriate welding tools, techniques, settings, and parameters for the material and joint.
- Inspect and test welds and check dimensions with measuring devices to ensure the finished product meets specifications and quality standards.
- Chip, grind, or clean excess weld, slag, and spatter, and prepare surfaces as needed.
- Operate a forklift to transport parts and components to work areas (with required certification).
- Operate an overhead crane or jib hoist to move and position heavy metal components safely.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area; follow all safety procedures; and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Return tools and equipment to their proper place at the end of each shift.
- Document production and report defects, equipment issues, or safety concerns.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Positive, team-oriented attitude.
- Blueprint reading skills and ability to read a tape measure.
- Proficient in shop mathematics and layout techniques.
- Basic written and verbal communication skills.
- Knowledge of hand tools such as sanders.
- Attention to detail.
- Ability to travel as needed.
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods standing and moving on a shop floor.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds; heavier material is handled with cranes, hoists, or team lifts.
- Frequent bending, stooping, reaching, gripping, and repetitive hand and arm motion.
- Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination sufficient for precise welding.
- Vision (with correction) adequate to read drawings and gauges and to weld to specification.
- Work is performed in a manufacturing environment with welding fumes, heat, sparks, noise, and moving equipment; consistent use of required PPE (welding helmet, flame-resistant clothing, gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, and safety footwear).
