At UConn Health, this position is responsible for managing the daily operations, staffing, and clinical-administrative support functions of the new UConn Medical Group Referral Center. The Nurse Manager will provide leadership and oversight to referral center staff and will work closely with ambulatory leadership, physicians, nursing teams, practice managers, and multidisciplinary staff to support timely, accurate, and patient-centered referral coordination across UConn Health's ambulatory areas.
SCHEDULE: This is a full-time 40 hour per week salaried position, with occasional off-shift or weekend hours as required. May be required to travel to off-site ambulatory locations as needed.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Reports to an ambulatory operations leader.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Provides nursing, clinical, operational, and administrative leadership to assigned referral center staff.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
Considerable knowledge of nursing practice, ambulatory operations, referral management, patient access workflows, and healthcare administration. Demonstrated ability to apply management principles and techniques; support safe, effective, and timely patient care coordination; use sound judgment in a fast-paced environment; and collaborate effectively with physicians, clinical leaders, practice teams, and multidisciplinary staff. Knowledge of regulatory requirements, patient privacy standards, patient safety expectations, and effective workforce utilization. Experience with interviewing, hiring, training, managing, coaching, and evaluating staff. Experience with patient care flow processes, centralized scheduling or referral workflows, and process improvement is strongly preferred.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Manages the daily operational activities of the UConn Medical Group Referral Center, including staffing, workflows, performance expectations, and service standards.
Provides direct oversight, coaching, training, and support to referral center staff to ensure consistent, accurate, and professional handling of referrals across ambulatory areas.
Supports the rollout and implementation of the new referral center model across all UConn Health ambulatory practices, working closely with leadership and practice teams to promote successful adoption.
Partners with ambulatory leadership, physicians, nursing staff, practice managers, clinical coordinators, and other stakeholders to standardize referral workflows and improve communication between departments.
Monitors referral center performance, identifies barriers or trends, and recommends workflow changes to improve timeliness, quality, patient experience, and operational efficiency.
Uses data and outcome measures to assess referral center activity, evaluate staff performance, and support measurable improvements in referral management and patient access.
Administers personnel actions, including recruiting and onboarding staff, ensuring appropriate staffing levels, coaching and counseling employees, completing timely performance evaluations, and supporting staff development.
Ensures staff adhere to UConn Health policies, patient safety standards, privacy requirements, and expected customer service standards.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
General Experience:
Graduate of an accredited nursing program and eight (8) years nursing experience
Two (2) years of experience must have been in a supervisory capacity, preferably in an outpatient, ambulatory, referral management, patient access, or centralized scheduling environment.
Must possess and maintain a current State of Connecticut Registered Nurse license.

Master's degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, or related healthcare field
Experience in ambulatory operations, referral management, patient access, centralized scheduling, care coordination, or practice operations.
Quality assurance, quality improvement, and workflow implementation experience
Experience supporting change management, staff training, and implementation of new operational models
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with physicians, clinical leaders, staff, patients, families, and other stakeholders.
