CNC Lathe Machinist – 2nd Shift | Full-Time | Monday–Thursday | 3:00 PM–1:30 AM | 4-Day Workweek
Job Overview
An established heavy industrial manufacturing company in the Pearisburg, VA area is seeking an experienced CNC Lathe Machinist to join our machine shop on 2nd shift.
This is a full-time position working Monday through Thursday from 3:00 PM to 1:30 AM, giving you a consistent 4-day workweek and 3-day weekend.
We are looking for a skilled machinist—not simply a machine operator—who is comfortable setting up and operating CNC lathes, reading prints, selecting tooling, making machine adjustments, inspecting finished parts, and troubleshooting machining issues.
Our machine shop handles a variety of industrial machining work, including custom components, repair parts, shafts, and other precision-machined components. This is a good opportunity for a machinist who enjoys variety and hands-on problem solving rather than running the same production part every day.
A successful candidate must be capable of working independently and making sound machining decisions with limited supervision.
Responsibilities
- Set up and operate CNC lathes to manufacture parts according to drawings and specifications
- Perform turning, facing, boring, drilling, threading, grooving, and other lathe operations
- Read and interpret blueprints, shop drawings, and machining specifications
- Set work offsets, tool offsets, and make necessary adjustments at the machine
- Select appropriate tooling and inserts for the job
- Determine and adjust speeds and feeds as necessary
- Properly load, indicate, and secure workpieces
- Make CNC program edits and adjustments at the machine when necessary
- Monitor machining operations and make adjustments to maintain part quality and tolerances
- Inspect your own work using micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, indicators, and other precision measuring equipment
- Troubleshoot setup, tooling, finish, and machining issues
- Maintain an organized and safe work area
- Follow established quality and safety procedures
Qualifications
Preferred qualifications include:
- 3+ years of CNC lathe machining experience
- Strong CNC lathe setup and operation experience
- Ability to independently set up jobs from prints or drawings
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and machining drawings
- Experience with tooling selection, speeds, feeds, offsets, and machine adjustments
- Experience making CNC program edits at the machine
- Proficiency with micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, indicators, and other measuring equipment
- Ability to machine parts to specified tolerances
- Strong mechanical and problem-solving skills
- Experience machining steel and other industrial materials
- Experience with custom, one-off, repair, and low-volume machining is a plus
- Experience machining larger industrial components is a plus
We are specifically looking for an experienced machinist who can set up and run CNC lathes independently. Candidates whose experience is primarily loading/unloading parts or machine tending may not be a fit for this position.
