Fire Prevention Specialist II - $84,184.20 - $107,763.16 Annually

Under supervision (Fire Prevention Specialist I) or general supervision (Fire Prevention Specialist II) in a civilian capacity, performs a variety of technical work including technical plan checks and inspections for a variety of facilities and construction sites to ensure compliance with State and local fire and life safety codes and ordinances; assists in coordinating public fire education program; maintains a variety of records, files, and related documents; performs related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Fire Prevention Specialist I
This is the entry-level of the Fire Prevention Specialist series. This class is distinguished from the Fire Prevention Specialist II by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to positions within the series. Assignments are generally limited in scope and are performed within a procedural framework established by higher-level employees.
Fire Prevention Specialist II
This is the full journey-level classification in the Fire Prevention Specialist series. Positions within this class are distinguished from the Fire Prevention Specialist I by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned, greater complexity of assignments, and by the greater independence with which an incumbent is expected to perform. A Fire Prevention Specialist II receives occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by progression from the Fire Prevention Specialist I level when experience and required licenses and certifications are obtained and progression criteria is met, or when filled from the outside, require prior directly related experience and possession of required licenses and certifications.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Fire Prevention Specialist I
Receives supervision from higher level administrative and supervisory staff.
Exercises no supervision.
Fire Prevention Specialist II
Receives general supervision from higher level administrative and supervisory staff.
May exercise technical field supervision and training over Fire Prevention Specialist I positions.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Essential job functions include, but are not limited to, the following: These functions may not be present in all positions in this classification. When a position is to be filled, the essential functions will be noted in the announcement of position availability. Management reserves the right to add, modify, change or rescind work assignments as needed.
Performs technical plan checks to determine compliance with fire and building codes, but not limited to checking underground fire mains, fire alarm, and fire suppression systems.
Inspects institutions, industries, retail establishments, hotels, apartment and condominium complexes, service stations, schools, hospitals, nursing and convalescent units, and other establishments to secure compliance with codes and regulations pertaining to fire safety; makes recommendations concerning fire safety for public assemblies.
Participates in post-fire investigations and analyses as needed; including collecting and evaluating data and preparing comprehensive reports.
Investigates and responds to complaints and requests for information from the public.
Attends and/or participates in meetings and conferences; gives public presentations on fire safety and fire prevention topics.
Performs related work as assigned.

THE SELECTION PROCESSShall consist of two phases: (If you should need assistance in completing the employment application or in participating in the selection process, please notify Human Resources prior to the filing deadline or as soon as possible).
Phase One - Application Review: The first phase of the selection process shall be a detailed review and appraisal of each candidate’s application. Those candidates determined to be most qualified on the basis of education and experience, as submitted, may be invited to participate in the next phase of the selection process. No weight shall be assigned to this phase of the selection process.
Phase Two - Oral Appraisal Interview: Candidates who receive a minimum score of 70% on this phase shall have their name placed on the Eligibility List for Fire Prevention Specialist I/II. Eligibility Lists are generally valid for one year. Once the list is established, the Fire Department may conduct follow-up assessments.
Prospective candidates must successfully complete a thorough background review. Upon a contingent offer of employment, prospective candidates must successfully complete a medical examination and provide proof of legal work status. All new employees will be fingerprinted as a part of the employment process and a criminal history check will be conducted with the Department of Justice and Federal Bureau of Investigation.
In accordance with Government Code Section 3100, in the event of a disaster, City employees are considered disaster service workers and may be asked to respond accordingly.
