Ergonomics Specialist
Location: San Francisco Bay Area, California
Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Ergonomics Specialist to provide comprehensive ergonomic services throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. This role requires a minimum of five years of professional ergonomics experience and demonstrated expertise performing both office and industrial ergonomic evaluations.
The Ergonomics Specialist will provide high-quality ergonomic services that help clients proactively identify and reduce musculoskeletal risk. The position is intended for an experienced ergonomics professional capable of independently evaluating both office and industrial environments, developing practical solutions, and serving as a trusted ergonomic resource to employees and organizational leadership.
The Ergonomics Specialist will work directly with a variety of environments assessing job tasks, ergonomic risk factors, and develop practical recommendations that reduce workplace injuries.
The ideal candidate is an experienced professional who can independently assess a wide range of work environments, communicate effectively with employees and leadership, and provide evidence-based ergonomic recommendations that are practical, defensible, and operationally appropriate.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Office Ergonomics
- Conduct comprehensive office ergonomic evaluations for employees working in traditional office, hybrid, remote, and specialized workstation environments.
- Develop practical recommendations involving engineering controls, administrative controls, equipment modifications, task redesign, and improved work practices.
- Evaluate workstation setup, seating, monitor placement, keyboard and mouse positioning, work surfaces, accessories, lighting, and employee work practices.
- Educate employees regarding proper workstation setup, neutral positioning, movement strategies, and healthy work habits.
- Provide appropriate recommendations for chairs, input devices, monitor solutions, sit-stand equipment, accessories, and workstation modifications.
- Prepare clear, professional ergonomic evaluation reports and recommendations.
Industrial Ergonomics
- Perform ergonomic assessments in industrial, manufacturing, warehouse, healthcare, laboratory, material-handling, and other physically demanding work environments.
- Analyze work processes, equipment, tools, workstation design, and employee work methods.
- Evaluate proposed equipment, workplace modifications, and ergonomic interventions when requested.
- Conduct follow-up assessments to determine effectiveness of implemented recommendations.
Ergonomic Assessment Expertise
- The Ergonomics Specialist must be capable of independently selecting and applying appropriate ergonomic assessment methodologies based on the task being evaluated.
- Experience with recognized assessment tools and methodologies may include:
- Various Lifting Evaluations, REBA, RULA, Strain Index, LMMMHT, and additional materials handling assessments.
- The specialist must also be able to interpret assessment findings and translate technical ergonomic information into practical recommendations.
Client Consultation and Communication
- Serve as a professional ergonomic resource to employees, supervisors, managers, Safety/EHS professionals, and client leadership.
- Communicate ergonomic findings clearly and objectively.
- Explain ergonomic risks and make recommendations in a manner that is understandable to both employees and management.
- Collaborate with client stakeholders to develop practical solutions that balance employee safety, operational requirements, productivity, and cost.
- Present ergonomic findings and recommendations to management and leadership when appropriate.
- Identify significant ergonomic concerns and communicate them through established escalation processes.
- Maintain a professional, consultative presence at all client locations.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of five years of professional ergonomics experience.
- Demonstrated experience independently performing both office and industrial ergonomic assessments.
- Strong knowledge of ergonomic principles, biomechanics, human anatomy, and musculoskeletal risk factors.
- Experience evaluating physically demanding job tasks including lifting, pushing, pulling, carrying, repetitive work, and awkward postures.
- Ability to independently identify ergonomic hazards and develop appropriate corrective recommendations.
- Strong understanding of engineering controls, administrative controls, and work-practice interventions.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong client-facing and consultative skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with employees, supervisors, managers, Safety/EHS professionals, and executive leadership.
- Ability to work independently and exercise sound professional judgment.
- Strong documentation and report-writing skills.
- Ability to manage multiple client needs, assessments, and priorities.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and electronic documentation systems.
- Ability to travel throughout the San Francisco Bay Area to client locations.
Education
- Bachelor's degree or higher in one of the following or a closely related discipline is preferred: Ergonomics, Human Factors, Industrial Engineering, or another related field.
- Equivalent education combined with extensive professional ergonomics experience may be considered.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certified Professional Ergonomist (CPE), Associate Ergonomics Professional (AEP), or equivalent ergonomics credential.
- Experience in office, manufacturing, laboratory, and industrial environments.
- Experience conducting complex ergonomic risk assessments.
- Experience presenting findings and recommendations to management and senior leadership.
Physical and Work Requirements
The position may require the ability to:
- Travel regularly between client locations throughout the San Francisco Bay Area.
- Walk and stand for extended periods in active workplace environments.
- Bend, squat, kneel, reach, and demonstrate appropriate body mechanics.
- Observe employees performing physically demanding work.
- Demonstrate lifting, pushing, pulling, and material-handling techniques.
- Access production, warehouse, healthcare, laboratory, and office environments.
- Occasionally move or adjust ergonomic equipment.
- Work independently at client sites with minimal supervision.
Travel Requirement
- Regular same-day travel to client sites is required throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. Overnight travel is not anticipated.
- Reliable transportation, a valid driver's license, auto insurance, and the ability to travel to client sites are required.
Compensation
- Full-time, 40 hours a week.
- Starting: $110,000 depending on qualifications, relevant experience, and certification.
