Gulf Coast Social Services is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Medical Assistant to join our team at the South-Central Louisiana Human Services Authority (SCLHSA) Terrebonne Behavioral Health Clinic. The Clinical Medical Assistant position functions as a Medical Assistant to the Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) in the primary care program of the SCLHSA. This position will accompany the APRN to scheduled visits at the various clinic sites on a rotating basis.
Essential Job Functions:
- Greet patients and update electronic health records by collecting and documenting vital signs, current medications, and medical history. Assist with obtaining and processing insurance and laboratory forms/ results, collecting urine specimens and other diagnostic materials, managing messages and routine correspondence, scheduling appointments, and coordinating referrals to appropriate levels of care.
- Schedule appointments in the electronic health record system and manage messages and other routine correspondence. Maintains patient records according to SCLHSA policies and procedures.
- Prepare patients for examinations by obtaining, assessing, and recording vital signs, and ensure lab work results or other test results are entered in the patient's electronic health record system.
- Prepare clients for medical clearance appointments, perform HIV, TB, Syphilis, pregnancy, and glucose testing when indicated with client consent.
- Complete prior authorizations when needed.
- Complete referrals, document the referral information, and follow up appropriately to ensure continuity of care.
- Assist the practitioner in delivering health services, treatments, examinations, and procedures for patients.
- Collect samples of blood and urine, and perform vision and audio testing, as needed.
- Ensure examination areas are fully stocked, organized, cleaned, and disinfected, and that supplies are ordered as needed.
- Assist with cleaning examination areas, as required.
- Provide constant visual monitoring and care for suicidal, combative, or agitated patients to ensure the safety and well-being of the patients, and document accordingly.
- Perform similar job-related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- High School Diploma or GED with a minimum of one year of experience
- Medical Assistant Certification (Required)
- Good verbal, written and interpersonal skills, the ability to represent the Agency in a highly professional manner and the ability to maintain the highest level of confidentiality.
- Good judgment, initiative, dependability, sound decision-making skills, the ability to handle multiple responsibilities, strong organizational and time management skills, and the ability to prioritize work and meet multiple deadlines.
- Ability to work independently on assigned tasks and to work collectively with the administrative team.
- A valid Louisiana driver's license, proof of auto liability insurance, and access to a reliable vehicle in safe operating conditions.
- Ability to pass a criminal background check, drug screenings, and a Louisiana motor vehicle record check.
