Job Description:
The Culinary Assistant of the FoodTEC Workforce Program is responsible for ensuring the Chef instructors have the food and equipment needed before each class. The Culinary Assistant receives or shops for food items; stores and maintains an inventory of food, equipment, and small wares. The Culinary Assistant assists the Chef Instructors and students during the class, which may include prepping, cutting, cooking, and sanitation. The Culinary Assistant maintains the overall sanitation standards of the FoodTEC commercial kitchen space, including the kitchen, equipment, appliances, and bathrooms.
This position may require fluctuating work hours depending on project deadlines.
Job Requirements:
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Worker Characteristics:
- Relevant work experience in one or more of the following areas: food service, fine dining, multi-unit restaurant operations

Excellent food preparation and cooking techniques

Ability to use and maintain equipment in a commercial kitchen

Ability to wash, peel and cut vegetables

Ability to prepare a wide range of kitchen ingredients

Basic knowledge of kitchen hygiene and safety standards

Attention to detail and interpersonal skills

Effective oral communication skills

Academic degrees or professional credentials in a related discipline

ServSafe certification preferred

Knowledge of food safety, HACCP systems, GMP, and SQF food safety standards

Problem-solving skills, including the ability to identify appropriate processes for addressing issues, develop supportable recommendations, build consensus, and ensure successful implementation

Knowledge of, or willingness to learn, procedures, operations, organizational structures, and principles of higher education institutions

Commitment to the principles of equity and inclusion, and understanding of diversity-related issues, including effective communication and interaction with individuals from diverse cultural, social, and experiential backgrounds

Salary: $20-$25 per hour, commensurate with experience. This is a grant funded position and is contingent upon the availability of continued grant funding.
