The purpose of this position is to operate a variety of heavy equipment for the purposes of road/bridge construction and maintenance. This position is located in District 61/Unit 520/Ascension Parish of the Department of Transportation and Development and reports directly to the Highway Foreman 1. The incumbent must be self-motivated and be able to perform duties with minimal supervision and able to interpret unforeseen conditions as they may arise. The incumbent will participate in appropriate DOTD structured training programs and attend all continuing education classes and conferences deemed necessary to facilitate the performance of required tasks. While in official capacity, DOTD employees must comply with applicable Louisiana and Civil Service laws, rules and regulations, as well as DOTD policies, procedures, manuals and directives.

Job Duties:
Operates the following heavy equipment, as needed: Asphalt Distributor (truck mounted), Backhoes, Front end loaders, Bucket/ladder trucks, Cranes/draglines (lifting capacity >20,000 lbs but <40,000 lbs, Dozers (<140 HP), Dump truck (tandem axle or trailer dump), Gradalls, and Hot mix pavers (<40 HP)
Operates skid steers, rollers, jet air patcher, 72+-hp tractors with 15ft. bat wing mowers, and tractor mounted slope mower.
Performs manual tasks such as pothole patching, manual cutting of bush and grass, ditch digging, cleaning buildings, assisting in mud jack operations, cutting trees, removing dead animal carcasses, collecting litter, cleaning & repairing of Asphaltic Concrete and Portland Cement Concrete Pavements. Uses a variety of hand tools such as: shovels, rakes, jackhammer, demolition saw, chain saw, string trimmer, and pole saw.
Installs and maintains temporary traffic control devices and serves as a flag person during traffic control operations.
Performs minor repairs, services, preventative maintenance, and cleans equipment in accordance with operator’s manual and manufacture’s recommendations to keep equipment operating efficiently and safely.

Appointment Type: Probational or Promotional
Career Progression: As part of a Career Progression Group, vacancies may be filled from this recruitment as a Mobile Equipment Operator 1, Mobile Equipment Operator2, or Mobile Equipment Operator1/Heavy depending on the level of experience and licensure of the selected applicant(s).
Mobile Equipment Operator 1 positions are required to have a Class “D” Chauffeurs License before making permanent. Mobile Equipment Operator 2 and 1/Heavy positions are required to have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License upon appointment.
Compensation: Below is the starting hourly rate for each level and additional compensation information for the MEO 1 and MEO 2.

MEO 1: $16.06/hourly. Receives Premium Pay in the amount of $1.00/hour for all hours worked and a 10% base pay increase will be granted upon attainment of permanent status.

MEO 2: $17.18/hourly. Receives Premium Pay in the amount of $1.00/hour for all hours worked, and a 10% base pay increase will be granted upon attainment of permanent status.

MEO 1/Heavy: $21.05/hourly.
