Job Summary
The Surgical Technician in the Endoscopy Center is responsible for providing physicians with instruments and supplies,preparation of the sterile field, specimen preparation and cleaning/processing of endoscopic equipment. Performs allduties within OSHA, DNV, AORN, SGNA and department policies and procedures.
Responsibilities
Assists Procedural Team
Sets up endoscope, accessories, and supplies using aseptic technique. Labels all medications/irrigations on field appropriately. Confirms with physician allmedication/irrigations on field. Actively participates in the patient identification, procedure verification and participates in the “timeout” and specimen handling. Assists and anticipates physician’s need in endoscopic equipment. Regularly assists other team members in safely moving/positioning patients. Transports contaminated endoscope/accessories appropriately to the decontam ination areas. Always remains alert during procedures and demonstrates an ability to handle unexpected situationswith calm efficiency. Always consults other staff members when in question or when unfamiliar with equipmentprocedures. Always follows direction of staff nurse for maximum patient care and minimal adverse situations.
Manages Supplies Instrumentation and Equipment
Selects endoscope, equipment, and supplies needed for each individual endoscopic procedure. Performs the endoscope “pre cleaning” process at the end of procedure. Assists with the ordering of supplies for the unit. Safely and accurately handles and discards all sharps, disposables and linens. Ensures that necessary supplies are available and that rooms are stocked appropriately. Cleans and prepares rooms between procedures, according to policy. Ensures that all supplies, equipment and instrumentation are available and properly functioning priorto procedure. Reports malfunctioning instruments and equipment in a timely manner to appropriate staff.
Specimen Handling
Confirms specimen identification with surgeon. Correctly identifies and prepares specimen. Confirms specimen identification with circulating nurse.
Endoscopic Equipment Care, Disinfection and Storage
Utilizes principles of aseptic techniques when processing endscopy equipment and accessories. Performs leak tests, cleans endscopes thoroughly and efficiently using appropriate methods. Uses endoscope processor to process /disinfect endoscopes safely in accordance with policy andprocedures. Tests the disinfectant solution regularly as per manufacturer’s recommendations. Ensures endoscopes are properly and safely stored. Takes initiative to identify equipment that needs to be replaced/repaired. Informs supervisorappropriately.
Performs Other Duties as Required
Takes initiative to ensure department is covered by volunteering for shift or call coverage. Attends mandatory in-services, staff meetings, actively participates in self-education and completesall required competency assessments on time. Willingly performs other duties as required. Identifies appropriate cases of abuse and neglect and demonstrates knowledge of mandatoryreporting requirements.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Heavy Work: Frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 lbs with a maximum lifting of 100 lbs.
Successful completion of a Surgical Technology program or a LPN/Surgical Technician/MA with previous surgical scrubbing experience; experience normally acquired through on-the-job training in an OR setting is preferred. Must possess excellent organizational skills and the ability to anticipate surgeon's needs during surgical procedures. Effective interpersonal communication skills in order to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with surgeons, coworkers and administrative personnel.
