JOB SUMMARY
This position is responsible for operating scales and providing assistance to customers at the county landfill.
MAJOR DUTIES
- Greets and directs customers to appropriate areas for materials disposal; provides customer service; answers telephone and provides assistance; assists with customer complaints.
- Communicates with personnel via two-way radio or on the phone.
- Maintains records of incoming and outgoing vehicles; weighs vehicles.
- Receives payment from customers.
- Balances funds at the end of the day.
- Maintains office, scale house, and equipment.
- Responds to after hour emergencies as needed.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
- Knowledge of department policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of scale house operations.
- Skill in the operation of scale equipment.
- Skill in customer service.
- Skill in maintaining files and records.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Landfill Manager assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include state and federal environmental regulations, county and department policies and procedures, and OSHA regulations. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
- The work consists of related customer service, administrative, and scale operation duties. Inclement weather conditions contribute to the complexity of the position.
- The purpose of this position is to perform scale operation and customer service duties. Successful performance helps the efficiency and effectiveness of department operations.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
- The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table.
- The work is typically performed in an office.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
None.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
