Health Office Attendant / Health Aide (Full-Time – 100% FTE)

Southside Community School is a community-focused K–8 charter school located in the south side of Tucson, serving approximately 225 students in Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade. We are seeking a Full-Time Health Office Attendant/Health Aide (100% FTE) to join our team. The regular work schedule is Monday through Friday.
Position Summary
The Health Office Attendant/Health Aide is responsible for supporting the physical health, safety, and well-being of students by providing basic first aid, administering medications, maintaining accurate health records, and collaborating with staff and families to ensure students receive appropriate care.
This position requires an individual who remains calm under pressure, demonstrates professionalism and compassion, communicates effectively with students, families, and staff, and works collaboratively with teachers and administrators to support students from Pre-K through 8th grade.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide first aid and basic health care for students experiencing minor illnesses or injuries, including cuts, scrapes, bruises, headaches, stomachaches, fevers, and other routine health concerns within the scope of training.
- Assess student health concerns and determine appropriate next steps, including returning students to class, contacting parents or guardians, referring concerns to administration, or initiating emergency procedures when appropriate.
- Administer student medications in accordance with physician orders, parental authorization, school policies, and applicable state regulations.
- Maintain accurate, confidential, and timely documentation of student health visits, medications, incidents, and communications.
- Monitor students with chronic medical conditions and follow established health care plans.
- Coordinate required hearing and vision screenings and maintain appropriate documentation.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and well-stocked health office.
- Attend required trainings and remain current on school health procedures, safety protocols, and applicable regulations.
- Communicate professionally with parents, staff, medical providers, and community agencies regarding student health concerns.
- Collaborate closely with teachers, Exceptional Education staff, counselors, administrators, and families to support students' physical, emotional, and behavioral well-being.
- Perform other duties related to the operation of the Health Office and student health and safety as assigned by the Principal.
Student Support, Behavior, and De-escalation
The Health Office is often a safe place for students who may be experiencing emotional distress, anxiety, behavioral challenges, or other non-medical concerns. The Health Office Attendant is expected to:
- Maintain a calm, patient, and reassuring demeanor during stressful situations.
- Utilize age-appropriate de-escalation techniques when working with students in Pre-K through 8th grade.
- Recognize signs of emotional or behavioral escalation and implement positive behavior support strategies.
- Assist students in regulating emotions while maintaining a safe and supportive environment.
- Work collaboratively with teachers and administrators when students require additional behavioral, emotional, or mental health support.
- Immediately report significant health, safety, behavioral, or mental health concerns to the Principal or designee.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Ability to obtain and maintain First Aid and CPR certification (or possess current certification upon hire).
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and comply with all federal, state, and school policies regarding student health records.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with teachers, administrators, counselors, Exceptional Education staff, and families.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and documentation skills.
- Demonstrated professionalism, sound judgment, and the ability to remain calm during emergencies or stressful situations.
- Experience working with children from Pre-K through 8th grade or in a pediatric, childcare, school, or related setting is preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to utilize positive behavior support and age-appropriate de-escalation techniques when working with students experiencing emotional, behavioral, or health-related concerns.
Preferred Qualifications
- Current First Aid and CPR certification.
- Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Medical Assistant (MA), Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), Registered Nurse (RN), or another healthcare-related certification is preferred.
- Experience administering medications, maintaining student health records, and coordinating school health screenings.
- Experience working in a school health office or pediatric healthcare setting.

Compensation & Benefits
Schedule: Monday–Friday (100% FTE)
Compensation: Starting at or above $15.45, with compensation based on qualifications, certifications, and relevant experience.
