Regular hours: Monday–Friday, 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM
Rotating Monday evening shifts: 12:00 PM – 8:00 PM
Possible early starts on Tuesdays and Thursdays: 7:20 AM start time
Position Summary
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Medical Assistant to join our OB/GYN practice. The Medical Assistant will provide clinical and administrative support to physicians, nurse practitioners, ensuring efficient patient flow, accurate documentation, and high-quality, patient-centered care in a busy outpatient setting.
Clinical Support
- Escort patients to examination rooms and complete initial intake, including chief complaint, obstetric/gynecologic history, medication list, allergies, and social history using the EMR.
- Measure and document vital signs and screening data: height, weight, blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and other required metrics.
- Assist providers with OB/GYN examinations and procedures, including Pap smears, pelvic exams, IUD insertions/removals, colposcopies, ultrasounds, prenatal visits, and minor office procedures.
- Prepare patients and set up equipment for exams and special procedures.
- Perform point-of-care tests as directed (e.g., urine pregnancy tests, rapid strep, urinalysis, glucose checks).
- Collect specimens (urine, blood, swabs) as ordered; ensure proper labeling, handling, and transport.
- Enter orders into the EMR for review and approval by a licensed independent provider.
- Obtain prior test results from outside laboratories, imaging centers, and other providers as needed.
- Provide patient education on medications, prenatal care, post-procedure instructions, and provider recommendations in a clear and effective manner.
- Maintain infection control standards; clean and sterilize instruments and dispose of contaminated supplies in accordance with OSHA and clinic policy.
- Ensure exam rooms are clean, stocked, and prepared after each patient and for specific procedures.
- Maintain adequate supply levels of medical inventory in exam rooms and procedure areas.
Administrative & Coordination Duties
- Answer phones, take messages, and respond to patient inquiries within office protocols.
- Create and update telephone encounters for patient concerns and requests; escalate to appropriate clinical staff and providers as needed.
- Assist with scheduling appointments, follow-ups, ultrasounds, and referrals.
- Support prior authorization and referral processes as needed.
- Ensure strict adherence to HIPAA, OSHA, and all applicable New York State regulations regarding patient privacy, safety, and scope of practice.
- Perform other clerical and administrative duties as assigned to support clinic operations.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program.
- Current New York State Medical Assistant certification/registration as required by state law.
- Computer proficiency with experience using EMR/EHR systems.
- Knowledge of medical terminology, vital signs, phlebotomy, specimen collection, and basic laboratory procedures.
- Understanding of OB/GYN terminology and workflow is strongly preferred.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to explain instructions clearly and sensitively to patients.
- Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to meet deadlines.
- Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
- Self-directed, self-motivated, and able to multi-task effectively.
- Professional phone etiquette and a patient-centered approach to care.
- Flexibility to work rotating Monday evening shifts and occasional early morning starts.
Pay: $21.00 - $25.00 per hour
