The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe is hiring a Tribal Comptroller to direct and oversee accounting operations, financial reporting, budgeting, audit support, internal controls, and financial compliance. This position plays an important leadership role in maintaining accurate financial records, supporting grant and governmental financial management, and helping ensure the Tribe’s long-term fiscal health and sustainability.
The Tribal Comptroller will supervise accounting staff, collaborate with Tribal departments and leadership, and provide financial information and analysis that supports responsible decision-making, transparency, and stewardship of Tribal and grant resources.
What You’ll Do
- Oversee accounting operations, including general ledger, payroll, accounts payable and receivable, revenues, expenditures, cash management, and banking activities.
- Prepare and present financial statements, budget reports, variance analyses, forecasts, and grant financial reports.
- Lead annual budget development, administration, monitoring, and financial analysis.
- Maintain accurate financial records and ensure timely month-end and year-end close processes.
- Support annual audits and financial reviews, including account reconciliations, schedules, responses to inquiries, and implementation of recommendations.
- Strengthen internal controls, financial policies, procedures, and accountability measures.
- Monitor financial, compliance, and operational risks and recommend mitigation strategies.
- Support financial management of grant-funded programs, including expenditure tracking, cost allocation, reporting, and compliance with award requirements.
- Supervise, guide, and develop accounting staff while promoting accountability, professional growth, and continuous improvement.
- Collaborate with departments, program leaders, and executive leadership to support financial planning and operational effectiveness.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related field.
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation.
- At least 8 years of progressive accounting or finance experience, including financial reporting, audits, and internal controls.
- At least 5 years of leadership experience managing accounting or finance teams.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, variance analysis, audit processes, and internal controls.
- Proficiency with financial systems and enterprise software, with the ability to adapt to new technologies.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree, such as an MBA or MPA.
- Experience in governmental, tribal, nonprofit, highly regulated, or grant-funded environments.
- Experience leading audit preparation, grant reporting, cost allocation, financial compliance, and internal control improvements.
