Controls Field Technicians support the installation, commissioning, troubleshooting, and maintenance of industrial control systems across a variety of markets including manufacturing, building automation, data centers, wastewater, and more. This position performs daily field-based tasks including system startup support, control panel installation, troubleshooting of electrical and control issues, and configuration of PLCs, HMIs, and related devices.
A key competency in this role is the ability to diagnose and resolve issues across electrical, mechanical, and controls domains while working in dynamic field environments. Success in this role will be demonstrated by safe execution of field work, timely resolution of system issues, and consistent delivery of reliable, well-documented solutions. A fundamental understanding of electrical theory and wiring principles is required, along with adherence to LOTO procedures and NFPA 70E Arc Flash safety standards when performing field work.
This is a hands-on technical role that contributes directly to system performance and customer satisfaction. It is designed to build experience in industrial automation and provide a pathway toward advanced technical or engineering roles.
Key Responsibilities
- Install, wire, and terminate control panels, field devices, sensors, and actuators
- Apply electrical theory and wiring principles when troubleshooting and validating control circuits
- Support system startups, commissioning activities, and site acceptance testing (SAT)
- Troubleshoot control system issues related to electrical, instrumentation, and hardware
- Interpret and work from electrical schematics, loop diagrams, and control documentation
- Perform PLC I/O verification, address checks, and basic configuration tasks
- Assist with HMI setup, navigation, and minor graphical adjustments
- Configure and troubleshoot VFDs and motor control systems
- Diagnose and resolve industrial network and communication issues
- Perform basic PLC logic modifications and debugging (as authorized)
- Support integration of equipment using industrial protocols including Modbus, Ethernet/IP, and similar
- Perform calibration and verification of instrumentation and process signals
- Provide on-site technical assistance to internal teams and customers
- Work with vendors to support controls-related field activities
- Document field changes, redlines, and as-built updates
- Maintain accurate service reports and commissioning documentation
- Meet defined performance metrics related to quality, safety, and responsiveness
- Work at customer sites with minimal supervision
- Travel as required, including overnight or extended travel as needed
- Follow all LOTO procedures and NFPA 70E Arc Flash safety requirements during field work
- Mentor or support junior technicians as experience allows
Preferred Skills and Qualifications
- Experience with PLC platforms such as Rockwell Automation (ControlLogix / CompactLogix), Siemens, or Schneider Electric
- Familiarity with HMI/SCADA systems (Ignition, Wonderware, or similar)
- Experience with industrial networking and communications (Ethernet/IP, Modbus, Profinet)
- Strong understanding of electrical control systems and instrumentation
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, I&C drawing packages, and P&ID drawings
- Experience with VFD configuration and troubleshooting
- Basic knowledge of AutoCAD or reading redline drawings
- Strong analytical and problem-solving ability
- Excellent communication and documentation skills
- Proficient with Microsoft Windows OS and basic system tools
- Ability to determine customer needs and support practical implementation solutions
- Must be willing to travel domestically and internationally
Education
Associate degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Industrial Automation, Mechatronics, or related field; or equivalent field experience.
Experience
2–5 years of experience in electrical, controls, or industrial automation field work.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
- Primarily field-based role in industrial/Data Center/Field environments
- Exposure to noise, heat, and mechanical hazards
- Ability to stand, walk, climb, bend, and lift equipment as required
- May require extended shifts during system startups or outages
- Travel is required and may be frequent depending on project needs

Pay: $35.00 - $42.00 per hour
