State Title: Bus Driver Trainer
JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB GOAL:
Responsible for training school bus drivers and monitoring safe operation of school buses, including recognizing and addressing safety and liability issues.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.
- Five years’ experience as a School Bus Driver.
- Knowledge of traffic laws and regulations pertaining to school bus operation in the State of Florida.
- Valid Florida Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), qualification as a driver instructor and Florida certification as a trainer/evaluator.
- A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Ability to recognize and recommend needed changes for improving the safety of school bus routes, school bus stops, loading and unloading areas. Knowledge of current state and local laws, School Board Policies, and Transportation directives. Experience in driving all types of school buses and demonstrated ability to teach others how to operate buses safely and efficiently. Ability to distinguish the significant from the less significant when dealing with the behavior of the students on the bus. Skill in conflict resolution strategies. Skill in verbal and written communication and mathematical calculation.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develops and presents public awareness campaign
- Monitors buses at regular intervals for driver ability, safety, speed and enforcement of rules.
- Conducts Physico-physical and road tests on all bus drivers.
- Trains new applicants to operate school buses.
- Teaches traffic laws and regulations pertaining to school bus operation in the State of Florida
- Available to monitor drivers at all times while buses are operating regular routes and extra-curricular duty.
- Maintains a flexible work schedule.
- Works closely with Risk Management Department to ensure compliance on liability
- Conducts liaison activities with other governmental agencies concerning school bus stops, school crossings, and hazardous walking conditions.
- Investigates all accidents involving both the white and yellow fleet.
- Maintains close supervision of all drivers while they are operating buses, insures compliance with safety rules, state and local laws, and recruitment and transportation directives.
- Oversees driver recruitment; participates in job fairs.
- Performs related work as needed.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to climb stairs, walk distances required, lift student weight up to 40 lbs. and evacuate students from the school bus in an emergency.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the District’s approved compensation plan. Length of work year is twelve months; daily work hours are flexible, and consistent with those established by the District.
EVALUATION:
Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of personnel.
